Did Petty actually race this car or is it a fictional vehicle? How accurate are the chassis, engine, and interior parts?

Excellent photos JC! Just to add a little about the build. Mine is not 100% accurate, as Petty never drove the car with the quarter panel sponsors I used. However, I really wanted to build the Petty version and ultimately I liked the look of having the sponsors as opposed to leaving them off. The kit is a pretty accurate representation of the kit cars, though it is a bit fiddly. There are very few positive attachment points, so you kind of have to glue it together however it fits. The biggest drawback is the undersized engine. Many opt to replace it, but I didn’t have a suitable alternative, so I just used the one from the kit.

Great job Rob. I also like the kit cars. They just look GREAT sitting on all four.

I have a Kit Car kit on the shelf waiting for me to build. It's not a Dart. It won't be Petty, but lots of options in that regard.
I learned about the undersized engine recently when I want to build a 1967 Dodge Dart Trans Am racer. Starting with a Revell Dart kit that came with a 383 big block, I thought the engine from the Kit Car would work well. So I bought an engine on eBay. Not in the stock Dart it won't work out. I was working on a '69 Barracuda Trans Am phantom racer model at the same time and using the chassis and engine from the AMT '71 Duster kit. That engine measures out to scale and correct appearance for the engine in my 1/1 scale Dodge Durango in the driveway. Then I started mocking up the engine from the kit car... it's a whole bunch smaller. Seems to look OK in the Kit Car models, so...

I really like the later model Dart kit car with the bulging front fenders. I have parts of one of the Millennium Edition issues that I ruined as a younger builder. A lot of the pieces have gone by the wayside but I may be able to salvage the body to use with the reissued chassis. Just another project for the pile... lol
