Since it rained almost all weekend, I had some spare time to start the Fujimi 911 GT3R and experiment with decanted Krylon spray paint. I had a heck of a time finding anything that was close to the blue I needed, mainly because I didn't want to mix paint. The Krylon is a little too dark and doesn't have enough red to match the real car, but it's close enough. The paint went down a little grainy, which tells me it still needs thinning for airbrushing. I sanded it down with 3000- and 5000-grit sandpaper and hit it with a coat of Tamiya clear gloss. I didn't notice until I looked at the photo that I still need to polish the clear coat a lot more before I start with the decals. I'm not using any aftermarket on it besides decals. Just homemade dive planes for the front, since Fujimi doesn't provide them, and seat belts. Here's the car I'm building: linkBen

Thanks, Joel! I made a little progress last night. I'm wishing I had been able to find a slightly lighter shade of blue to match some of the decals, but I'll settle for this color. It's hard to find photos of the real car, so nobody but me will notice the difference. This is my first time using decals from Racing Decals 43. They are beautifully printed and the white decals are completely opaque. Now I'm wishing I'd used their BMW M6 GT3 2016 Daytona decals on my Platz M6 GT3 build. My only concern was the decals take forever to release from the backing paper. They did better, once I put the water dish on a coffee cup heater to keep the water very hot. They still take several minutes to release, so the decal process is taking about twice as long as normal. I guess I'm just used to decals printed by Cartograph and Indycals that release almost the instant you put them in water. The Miata in the background is my experiment with thinning Krylon with ~25% Mr Leveling Thinner. Straight out of the can, I had a lot of pebbling with both cars, requiring a lot of sanding. The thinned Krylon worked much better. On the Porsche, I just sanded and polished the daylights out of the paint to get it smooth. Ben

Thanks for the kind words!
I’ve been impressed with the race car decals I’ve used so far, like these and the ones from Hobby Design. I can tell you where to go for airplane stuff, but cars are a whole new world for me.

Ben, I took a look at the Racing Decals 43 site since, and I was impressed. There's a few sheets I'm interested in for future builds. Since you've done business with them, how is their turn around time from order, to ship, to receive, and how do they ship since they're over seas, and Were the decals securely packed? My final question is how much was the shipping, and how much is the VAT charge which I'm not use to.

Hi Joel,
I bought my decals through an eBay seller in Spain last year, so I don’t have any experience ordering direct from RD43. It only took them a week to get here. Spot Models also carries the line. The one US shop I found was out of stock.
Others can correct me but I think the VAT doesn’t apply to orders going outside the selling country. I don’t recall ever taking a hit for VAT. The shipping for these decals from the eBay shop was about what you’d see from a US shop.

Spot Models has become my first stop when I go looking for car model stuff. They’re like Sprue Brothers but for cars.

I use Spot a lot but I find their shipping a bit high ( from Spain ) and hard to figure out, still excellent range of products. Try BNA Model World. out of Australia, the prices are a little more favorable due to the US Dollars strength and they charge low shipping, strange because postage to Australia is really high but from there to here its really low.. Link www.bnamodelworld.com/ Comparing the two I would say I use BNA more..Chris

I try not to visit BNA's site too often. I've recently become the proud owner of an Aoshima Lamborghini Murcielago GT1 and Fujimi McLaren F1 GTR short tail because of their 40% off sales and great shipping. Ben

I end up buying most of my models from Scalehobbyist.com & Free Time Hobbies. Each only has a slightly better then basic selection and very little After Market. Will also checkout BNA as my brother loves them. He's a 100% large scale aircraft guy, and he finds their service and shipping simply outstanding.
