Hi guys.
I don't just build 1:24 scale kits but I also modify 1:43 diecast Fords. Usually it's just a paint/decal/wheel change but in this example I had to do the lot. When I went on the hunt for existing 1967/68 notchback Mustang models I found they don't exist and the white metal kits were out of proportion and way too much work (I tried and failed miserably). I started with a '64 notchback from Apex and a '67 fastback from Greenlight.
I cut the top off of the '64 and modified around the rear window to suit the '67 coupe.
I removed the fastback from the '67 body
and glued it on top and after some filler work and primer she was ready for resin casting.
I managed to get 10 castings out of the mould before the mould rubber started to deteriorate.
The interior is a modified version from a Models56 Mustang with scratchbuilt front seats and floorpan. Over time I bought up a whole supply of the same '64 and '67 models to use for the other parts that I couldn't cast or scratch build myself.
Ian Geoghegan 1967 Australian Touring Car Champion.
Neil Allen 1967
Bob Jane 1967
Fred Gibson 1968
Chris Brauer 1970
Bob Jane's 1968 Trans-Am from 1970
My own build with a '67 from Models56 and a Code3 Spark Trans-Am.
It was a lot of work and yet I still feel that it was easier than trying to get one of those white metal kits finished (I hate working with metal!!!)
I still haven't finished all of my intended subjects yet so stay tuned in the future for 4 more.
Thanks, ShawnS

I would sweat doing that in 1/25 and yet you make it look so easy in 1/43 !👍

Shawn, I'm actually speechless. Your builds are all amazing. My favorite, the 1970 notchback. Why? Simple, owned one as my daily driver for 10 years. Sold it with 140,000 mile for just $600.

SMTS did 1/43 kits and factory built 67 notchback but they are very expensive. Yours looks great and I wish more people would look at this scale because there are so many kits that were never done in larger scales.

Yeah I looked at the SMTS kits and found that I would have needed to buy the two diecast models to add the missing parts and extra details as well as the original $100+ for the SMTS kit. That wouldn't be financially viable for the 10+ models that I wanted to build. On top of that I had previously tried my hand at doing one of their '69 Boss Mustangs and found that the detail on it was very poor as well as missing pieces and just poor fitment all round. I know my limitations and working with metal isn't one of my greatest skills so I was happy to abandon the model. I have to say that anyone who builds white metal kits to a high standard gets my respect.

Tell us some more about the 69 Mustang. I suppose it would be easy to build one from the SMTS kit with decals from Pattos place but you mention it is made by Spark. Did you repaint it or do something else? I have the red/blue 69 Boss 302 by Spark which is very nice if not a little pricey.

The '69 is indeed a repainted Spark model. Originally I wanted to do an SMTS kit but the kit just wasn't all that good in my eyes and I had the chance to buy two Spark models for the same price as one SMTS kit. Due to the amount of work required for the SMTS kit it turned out modifying the Spark model was definitely the easiest option. It wasn't easy to strip the stubborn paint from the Spark resin body so it took a lot of work and I also had to remake the entire roll cage as Spark made it impossible to remove it without totally destroying it. I also added a second seat to the interior and a scratchbuilt bonnet scoop and rear wing. The decals are from Automodelli studio.
I have another in my stash to modify but it's not a priority at the moment.

ShawnS Great work on the Spark conversions. I will have to look into the decals. Here is my AMT conversion and the PDP 70 kit. Obviously the 69 needs a front spoiler. Someday I'll finish the Monogram 70 T/A and I'd like to do the Moffat version now that the 69 Boss 302 kit is available. I have plenty of the 1/43 AMT bodies so some of my diecast 69/70's may have to give up a few parts for the cause.
