If there is one, well there are many, procedures that I have not figured out, its Black or Chrome window trim!!! I have tried Bare Metal Foil in chrome and black with out results that meet my usual standards, I have used Paint pens and Markers with limited success , I have masked it off and airbrushed it but all in my opinion have been failures... I am at the point with the 64 Corvette that I either do it or leave it without!! I know, I know You all probably never thought you would hear me admit there was a modeling related item that I would admit I cant do... with all that said How about YOU? How do You do Window Trim? I can hand paint wipers and such but when It comes to trim, my hands are not steady enough.. A friend Ron Hall R.I.P. could actually Foil emblems and scripts on his wonderful Indy Pace Car models, but me..Oh well.. Chime in Guys and give me a hand!!!! Chris

Chris, I’m not the best at this but I find you have to make the trim as smooth as you can for the finish to look right. Thats the secret to good trim. I have painted and used foil, paint pens. For me a slow application of foil works best. Take a strip3 times as wide as the trim. Put it on each side of trim. Top,bottom and the sides. Some guys do it all in one piece. By putting cuts at the corner’s it hides the seam somewhat. Been told that moltof (spelled wrong) chrome airbrushed looks great. Have to try. Good luck in what every you choose.

Chris, I de-burr, sand and prep the chrome trim just like the rest of the body, prime and paint and try to get it as smooth as the rest of the body before foiling. The foil shows ANY imperfections but I feel it represents the older stainless trim as well as anything. I have used the Molotow chrome pens and find them invaluable for sprue attachment points on chrome parts but haven't yet tried spraying the Molotow refill liquid thru my airbrush. Back to the foil, I use a piece wide enough to wrap around the trim to the inside of the body and also overlap the trim on the outside by 1/16"-1/8". I use sharpened wooden toothpicks to burnish it into the groove between the trim and the body, then when it's all stuck down well, I use a piece of soft cotton cloth to finish burnishing, smooth it and polish it. Then I use a brand new #11 scalpel blade to trim it. A light touch here is required, followed by another rub down with the cotton cloth to seal the cut edge back down. The overlap on the inside gets a quick brush painting with body or interior color, no trimming here is required. Be careful when burnishing overlapped pieces so you don't catch the edge of the top piece, properly done the overlaps barely show at all. Good luck with whichever method you choose, foiling is just like every other modeling skill, it just takes practice. I'd be happy to foil it for you if you'd like to send it to New York!

Drama Over!!! I went to Hobby Lobby and bought the 2mm MOTOLOW Chrome pen, after practicing on the spare 64 Corvette body I sat down and laid it on, I made one error and since the Molotow is Alcohol based, simply wiped it off with an Alcohol Swab, and I have to say...I may be over My Window Trim Phobia!! The pics speak for them selves... I downloaded the online Hobby Lobby coupon 40% off and the pen was $11.99 and I walked out with it for $7.19 ! Now I wish they made it in Semi Gloss Black too.. Don't forget they also make a pen with black ink as well. I use a lot of those Moltow pens for detailing.
