Howdy folks, I recently received my re-up for Scale Auto. Being on a tight budget is this really a necessity anymore? I mean after joining this forum and all the other info it has opened up, is that magazine a must have as it once was 25 - 30 years ago? How many of you guys still suscribe? Just curious

I dropped them a few years back, they have become more advertising than content and tend to be a Hot Rod ? Drag builders mag. I have had cars in there so many times to count , actually represented them for several year at the RC XPO and done some special projects for them but I guess I lost my faith when I was getting issues with 90 out of 135 pages all ads.. Much more info here and you can actually interact with the builders. Chris

I can't argue with Chris's response. That's how the magazine world is (all mags, not just Scale Auto or modeling mags in general) and pretty much has always been, since most magazine exist to make their publishers a profit. It's just gotten worse over time, and some magazines are worse at it than others.
But for myself, I still find enough to enjoy in Scale Auto (and Finescale Modeler) that makes it worthwhile for me to subscribe so I don't miss an issue. And I really like having the actual magazine in my hands that I can look at any time and for as long as I keep the magazine. I have magazines that are 50 years old that I still enjoy looking at. Add the online forums like this one, and I benefit even more.
So it's really up to each individual to decide whether the magazine is worth it to buy. I still get every issue of Scale Auto and Finescale Modeler. I currently subscribe to both, but haven't always (it frustrates me to see the magazines on the shelf at our local hobby stores sometimes several weeks before I receive it in the mail). But for most other modeling and racing magazines, I look at them in the hobby/bookstore to decide whether the current issue is worth buying. Like Bill said, magazines can be murder on a modeling budget! For a period I decided to cut way back on the magazines I was buying, including modeling ones. But I later regretted some of the magazines I missed.

I admit, I dropped them several years ago when they went mostly diecast, but they have since seen the error of their ways. I re-up a couple of years ago and am quite happy with he mag. As for the advertising, I just went through the June and July issues. Each are 60 pages long, including covers (which is what SA does). In the June issue there are 8 full-page ads and 5 pages that are partially ads (1 of 1/3, 2 of 2/3, 2 of 1/2), all of which totals out as 10-2/3 pages of ads out of 60. In the July issue there 6 full-page ads and 4 pages that are partially ads (3 of 1/3, 1 of 1/2), which totals out to 7-1/2 pages of ads out of 60. Seems like a pretty good ratio to me. Mike

I am glad we still have many Model Car magazines available, they have a definite purpose in the hobby. I think my problem is, I am a technical minded person and if I dont actually learn something from a magazine article I dont have much use for it, that said it becomes a problem where I have so many ideas with out the magazines I dont find a lot of use for them. But Hey, that's me. I had all the issues of Car Modeler, SAE, and others way back to the early 60's but when I moved I dumped many them as spare baggage. I couldnt sell them , heck I couldnt get anyone to take them, even as a donation.. I went though the modeling magazines and saved maybe 150 with articles that interested me. I still have a lot from the 60's and 70's that are Sheer Inspiration. I find most of the techniques I learn are from online sites like Ours or even those 60's & 70's magazines. When there was no Photo etch, Resin parts or trans kits those guys made the parts and like I said I have a technical mind so I like that more so. Now days Sharing what we do on Our site is the best education a Modeler can get. If there is a question , in most cases a person will get 1/2 a dozen replies and choose what works for them. I love sharing with fellow members, and I do get a bunch of PM questions every week. I think anymore that is my place in this hobby, sharing and building for Me. I have had dozens of cars in the magazines, both Model and Real Car, and I am very proud of that, being able to help a guy out is more rewarding than a magazine pic. That's All Folk's...
