I built this OPEN COMP car about 14-15 yrs ago. I used the body from the AMT 55 street machine kit. The chassis came from an MPC southern stocker kit. The roll cage was fabbed from evergreen rod. The dash is sheet aluminium with the gauges made from Aluminium tubing. The padding on the bars is shrink tubbing. Engine is plumbed and wired. All decals are made on my printer. Paint is duplicolor...I hope you enjoy this walk back in time....
The Body donner kit.... Chassis and interior...

Very well done and authentic. Love the "zip ties" on the roll bar padding.

Excellent representation of one of the mainstays of grass roots racing in the USA.

I hate to "me too" a thread, but since I only work in 1/18 scale diecast, sometimes you 1/24 plastic guys create one that I can relate to. This is a picture of the final build combining an Ertl diecast Nova to a Racing Champions Nascar Monte Carlo chassis.

Great works as always Gary. I really like sportsman cars. I like race cars that are based on actual production cars.

Gary, that’s so cool and looks like it could run on any Saturday night race. Very nice details. Good job. And who care’s if it’s a old build. Just shows, a quality build is timeless.

Gary, A impressive build for sure, and to think that it's 15 years old, that makes it even more impressive. Your fabrication of the roll cage and padding/ties really kicks it up a few notches for sure.
I haven't given Nascar much of a thought is quite a long time, but with all of these exceptional builds, I'm going to start watching a few races when there's a break on Sunday from F1 & Indy Car, or like the Kentucky race that's on tonight. The only Nascar racing I just never liked are the restrictor plate races.

Thanks Joel.....This car really doesn't have anything to do with that association( NASCAR) This is what a short track car in the west coast would basically run in the OPEN COMPETITION races in it's class.
I kinda stopped watching NASCAR. Don't really like all these GOOFY stage things that they implemented. Plus...there's one driver that I really can not stand. My Cousin( Todd Carmichael) is on the crew of Martin Truex Jr. He's been with that team from DAY ONE when Barney (FURNITURE ROW)started that team out of Denver Colorado. I told Todd a few yrs back(when they WON the CHAMPIONSHIP) that I was pretty much done with NASCAR now that they have won the Championship. Now...they're starting to really run well again. That's what I heard today anyway. Might have to tune in for a race or two.

Gary, Thanks for that info. The local track in Riverhead, runs mostly Nascar races in various div, so I just naturally thought that was par for the course.
I did watch some of the Kentucky race last night, and like you, the 3 stage deal makes no sense other then to keep the field bunched up like the old mysterious yellow flags did.

I missed this one out of you when it was posted by Gary. What a great build and only see it as fitting to bring this one back to the top of the page. Thank you for being such a good friend in the modeling community for the past 10 years buddy. You're going to be missed.

I wasn’t in this forum yet back then so I missed it as well but Gary sent it to me in email after we talked about local stock cars one day. A beautiful build.
