With a cut-off of '63 I wasn't sure where to start a Cobra thread. A subject I have a 50 year obsession with. Obviously this is the anniversary of the first Cobra and it's maiden racing exploits, but soon it develops into all the other variations including the Targa car featured elsewhere... maybe 1963 Cobras here and the rest in USRRC? Your thoughts Chris...

Since there are no strict rules, you can post them anywhere you would like, the categories are simply there to make finding a specific topic or model easier.. USRRC would work.. Chris

A few Dave Friedman B&W from prints with captions on the back. The white car is Ken Miles at Riverside in February 1963 and the Cobra 1st Win, also at Riverside with Dave McDonald driving. This shot is on page 44 of Friedman's "Shelby American Original Archive '62-'65"

This is an older build (actually my first after being away from the hobby for many years) and what I considered at the time "box stock" except for the decals. I drew the numbers and had a rub-down made for them, but over the years they have crinkled some under the gloss coat. (Mike Quarterman did decals at some point) I only had one or two photo references at that time and have since found better ones that reveal the shorter scoop & louvers on the hood that I didn't do back then. I used the wires that came with the kit, but pulled the rims off the back to make them deeper dish. Obviously many after-market wires have arrived since to do a more convincing job. (Sorry about the purple cast on the background.)

The original issue of this kit is the only one that I'm aware of that came with the original AC steering wheel and the kidney-bean Halibrands. I know Round 2 just reissued it, but it says "drag parts" restored and I'm not sure about the rest. (it does say "real metal injector ram tubes" which is certainly better than my hollowed out plastic) As much as I love this kit, please stay tuned for my rant about all I found wrong with it then and in every reissue for almost 50 years...

This is the best shot to detail a proper version of the first race Cobra. This shows that it had the chrome bumpers up front but not the chrome ring around the grill opening. The classic shot of it following the #00 Z06 shows them on the back as well. (That '63 Z06 was on display at Amelia Island this past weekend.)

A few more shots to illustrate the many variations of the earliest cars. This I took last summer at the San Marino Concours. Unfortunately I didn't see it until it was leaving and only got a few quick iPhone pics, but it is owned locally so I'm sure I'll see it again. This is the classic drag version and I have recently "discovered" the black "El Cid" drag car that Lynn Park owns.

And last, but certainly not least the 1963 LeMans Cobra - one of two with the fastback roof. All of these using the early body as done by AMT... this is scanned from a book so not the same quality. Please Note: I mis-labeled this '64 and it is obviously 1963, but it is wrong in the caption on page 21 of Colin Comer's "Shelby Cobra Fifty Years" in a side bar about Ed Hugus who ran the white #4 Cobra at LeMans.

So you have to ask... after almost 50 years of the same mold, don't you think a whole line of AMT owners have gotten their money's worth from the original 1963 Shelby Cobra tool? Isn't it about time that they updated it with "real" features that would allow use hardened fans to replicate all the variations that did exist in the 60s? Not some clown-like roof that never existed, but an actual LeMans roof and/or a realistic drag car roof and an optional hood with louvers and the correct hood scoop! Templates to remove the rear fender radius for the modified cars, etc. etc. Why not a custom front end that would allow you to pre-date it as an AC Bristol with the Bristol motor too. (see Union's 1939 BMW 328 if you're looking for one) Decals? We've got tons of options... all the drag cars, Riverside, LeMans, George Lucas perhaps? (the yellow plus back & white race team with the '56 Ford pickup) It's the 50th Anniversary of one of, if not the greatest American car ever pulled out of hat, isn't it time to pay proper tribute in 1/25 scale? Just my 2 or 3 cents. Working on a LeMans version using the kit roof and lots of putty. Shortened trunk to accommodate the roof and puttied the sunken front fenders. (1/43 Monogram Cobra roof in blue and red roof for the drag cars is from an XKE kit, but not developed.) I just read in "Model Cars" mag about 3D printing models and parts so maybe that is the route to go in these days of advancing technologies.
