While waiting for the aftermarket stuff to show up for the 641/2, and seeing arcticwolf's build of this kit, I thought I might take a shot at it. I ordered the decals from Indycals for Villeneuve's first win at the Canadian Grand Prix. I ordered the pinstripes only, as I figure (hope) it will be easier to paint the white rather than work with those big white decals! I got some work done on the motor and after about 20 minutes trying to get those little tiny decals on the oil filter, I dropped it. But, there it was, right by my foot, thank you very much. However, about 10 seconds later, I dropped it again and 12 hours later, I still have no idea where it is! I moved the desk (bad idea...the dust bunnies behind there scared me!) and after sweeping and vacuuming (I have a robot vacuum so all the dirt goes in a little cup...easy to search), it is nowhere to be found. I heard it tick, ticking on the floor when it fell so I thought it would be another easy find. Nope...gone. No idea. In the end, it isn't going to be seen anyway but after spending about an hour sanding the mold seam, painting and decaling it, I thought it looked pretty good. Oh well...I'll probably find it about 6 projects down the road. Just my luck.

Here is how I find stuff on the floor, Mike.
I get the LED flashlight, lay down on the floor, and shine the light across the floor as it throws a better shadow. I am 100% on rescues from a brown shag carpet!
I probably just jinxed myself.

Is the 312T3 in 1/12th or 1/20th?

It's the Tamiya 1/20..... and this just happened.... I have laminate flooring in the bedroom/model room. Apparently when they laid the flooring, one piece was a bit short, so they hid it under the baseboard heater. While looking for another piece that fell tonight (I know...butterfingers) I happened to get down there with a light and saw this little speck of blue. Upon closer inspection, guess what it is? Yeah.... What are the chances of it finding a hole less than a 1/4 inch wide, in an 8 x 10 room? Oh well.....at least it's "home" now. Funny how the littlest things can cause you to go batsh*t crazy, if only for an hour or so

Finally got some time on this today. Got quite a bit accomplished. Got a couple coats of Tamiya primer down, then about an hour later, some Tamiya Pure White then some masking. Taped the mask from Indycals site to some Tamiya masking sheet then cut them out and applied them to the car. Needed to tighten up a few areas with tape but all in all, it worked out pretty good. Next, got some Tamiya Italian red on and waited for that to dry, then removed the masks. Next, had to mask off the red and white so I could do the interior in aluminum. Actually, it's Krylon Brillliant Silver but it doesn't seem to be very brilliant. I think it passes well for aluminum and it dries in about 15 minutes! Then the fun began. I ordered the wrong decals (duh!) so had to make them work. The pinstripes are individually laid down. Even the bottom long stripe is applied in 3 pieces. The long one, the shorter one above the radiator hole, then the little bitty vertical one. Not the way I had planned it but....sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I'll tackle the other side later. So, this is how far I made it. I started about 10 this morning and it's now 8:30PM. From bare plastic to most of the decals in one day. Gotta love Tamiya. Their paint dries super quick, enough to continue working in about an hour. I still have some work to do, obviously, some areas to touch up, some decals to finish and then on to final assembly, hopefully tomorrow. It's a holiday here in Canada so I'm planning to spend most of the day at the desk. We'll see how it goes.

Calling this one done. Had a few rough spots but pretty happy with the results. If I build another one, I know of a few things that I would do different but for now, this one is in the display cabinet.

Wow Very nice build! The paint work is ideal. I must admit I don't know alot about F1 and especially older F1 but I would say you nailed it!!! Congratulations on a job well done.

Thanks, folks! I'm fairly happy with it. As Brian mentioned, it's probably not Tamiya's best offering but makes for a nice little addition to my "quickly getting full" cabinet. And Paul...it was your build that got me started on this! I had it in the closet for about 2 years then after seeing yours I thought it might be time to haul it out. I painted the white areas, as well but ordered the wrong decals. The ones I ordered were for his first win in Montreal but the pinstripe layout doesn't match the kit. (Never noticed until it came time to start masking...cuz I'm smart like that. ) I had to cut the stripes to fit this one. I also noticed the Michelin decals on top of the rear wing don't seem to fit, either. They were the smallest ones on the sheet so there was no other option than to overlap them some. Maybe the non-Montreal sheet has smaller ones? Oh well...it was never meant to be a contest build so I'll probably be the only one to notice. You can see them in this pic....and, on another note, I fully understand why you hate pinstripes!

Hi Mike
You got me thinking so I went back and looked at what's left on the decal sheets and ... just like you, the Indycals "Michelin" for the back wing was too big. I used the Tamiya decals for that. Lucky that after 30 odd years they were still OK. As for pinstripes, I have three JPS's I have yet to build - I hate pinstripes, lol.
Once again, nice finished product man!

When we were talking earlier about buying kits and such overseas, one of the Tamiya kits I bought was this.... I ordered a JPS decal sheet to go with it and after the 312T3, I'm definately not looking forward to the decal process!
