Modelers made 3 of the MCS 8 cars the red Cabin car, the Leyton House green car and the Pink Team Le Mans car. I over the years was able to hunt all 3 down and pick them up for a reasonable price. Modelers was basically a division of Tamiya, the Ford DFV engine and all the parts were made by Tamiya and then boxed by Modelers. so the engine comes with 2 sets of cam covers , Cosworth DFV and Mugen CV, both the same engine on the real car, think of Mugen as a Tuner like AMG. I had accumulated a few sets of E. Jan 1/20 detail sets , actually for the Lotus 79, but they include detailed Injection parts, Turned Aluminum trumpets, Linkage, assorted Photo etch and more. like the MCS 8 kits also very hard to find now. I used the E. Jan detail set, R B Motion and other detail parts for the Tyrrell P-34 engine shown here, now stalled due to body fit problems, so far I am about half way through the conversion to a Mugen CV engine for the MCS 8. The chassis for the MCS 8 is a March F3000 piece with out riggers to hold the full body on. I am working on it this morning but the 50mph + winds are creating havoc on painting. stay tuned folks ...... Chris

Nice, Chris! I've never seen one being built. I have the Cabin and Pink versions and would love to find the Leyton House someday. Keep us updated on your progress on this one!

Brian Yeah, finding all 3 is not easy, unless you have a unlimited budget! On this build finding research for under body photos was very tuff, actually the photo from the NNL West of the Body off was about it. I spent many, many, many hours looking and the only pic was the one I took back in 1994 at the show. I also am having a hard time with the Mugen CV engine, although its basically a Ford DFV it has some slight differences, the electronics are not in the engine valley at least not in the kit, and there is no photos showing the injection pump which also would be in that location on a DFV, sooooo I am going to fudge a bit and build it DFV style mostly because of the lack of pics and the fact I have so many detail pieces that are used in that area, I think it will give a better look. According to the Japan Grand Champion page the MCS 8 did have some cars that ran the normal DFV, I guess I won't be too far off and then there's the Modeler's choice anyway.. Chris

Fascinating car. I knew they existed as I had the HO Slot cars that Tyco made back in the 90's, but didn't know the actual name or their origin. Why I love this site and hobby... learn something new almost daily.

I still have the Tyco HO slot versions of them, including an unpainted, unassembled one that I have in primer on its way to becoming the Leyton House version. Neat looking cars, reminiscent of the single seat Can-Am cars.

I sold most of mine a few years ago. I kept one that I had in the Box. Just sold 3 unpainted ones on eBay that I used as IROC cars back when I had my commercial HO Slot Car track. There were 4: Advant; Cabin; Mizuno; and a Pink. Red and white unpainted ones were sold by a US Distrubutor back in the day.

I have one red unpainted HO Body I picked a while back, on the Japan Grand Championship..I have been following it since the early eighties and even though it has Mutated a bit I still follow it. Some great cars and neat tricks on aero packages.. Good Stuff Chris

DORK!!!! I had the Cam Covers all ready to seal with the Mugen Logos on them very nicely and since I had just finished placing all the R B Motion bolts on them I decided to check they cleared the Engine.. a then the DORK moment.... I put the Mugen emblems Upside Down! So I spent a time digging through the decal binders looking for replacements and I got Em' .. so I stripped them off with Scotch Tape just like my Dad showed me 40 years ago and now I will put them on this morning... DORK!!!!!! Chris

Chris, Let me be the 1st to admit that I knew next to nothing about the Mooncraft Special MCS 8 Japanese Grand Championship cars as I know very little about most of the Japanese and Asian racing series and those cars designed specifically for them. So it's gonna be Google time and start the learning process. And I knew literally nothing about those kits. So you can bet I'll be following every update and post you make.
Strange, but I thought that the partnership arrangement that Tamiya has with Ebbro was a one of.

Tamiya has done kits for several other manufactures or at least parts for them, initially Studio 27 resin full kits had almost all Tamiya underpinnings, Model Factory Hiro had many kits using Tamiya parts, mostly engines and suspension trees... as did Modelers, in the MCS 8 it is 100% Tamiya probably the molds came from Modelers and Tamiya did the Injection plastic work. I have a Studio 27 Adrian Fernandes Reynard Indy car kit that is merely a Revell Reynard in a Studio 27 box with Studio 27 decals , thats an odd and rare find.. It seems Tamiya is always willing to work with other Japanese companies.. Chris

Chris, Sure sounds like one really has to do their research on anything that's out of the regular channels for kits. For Studio 27 to have reboxed the Revell Reynard, and just added decals, seems like a really shady deal as I'm willing to bet that the boxing costs way more then the Revell kit ever sold for. Of course they'd justify it by the special decals included.

Chris, are these the cars that raced mid to late 80's? They look like single seat Can-Ams, maybe a bit smaller?
Cool car you're building, is it 1/20th?

Yes these ran 1988 to 1990 and beyond actually , to me they look like a Shelby Can Am series car.. but they are a March F3000 chassis with a full body! Yes 1/20th Chris
