I don't normally build 1/25th anythings, but this one I couldn't resist. It's all Joel's fault, lol. And no, I'm not trying to compete, besides, I know better. Also its good practice for an oddball 1/25th I'm going to try later. This car seems to have had a number of incarnations, or alterations, over its life. So I'm not even going to try to guess whats authentic. I'm going with what (I hope) looks at least plausible, if you know what I mean. And you might as well start with the decals. (banging head against wall). Here's the Revell sheet on top, Indycals on bottom:
Are we talking about the same car here? Turns out they're probably both right.
Taken at Watkins Glen, 2002:
So they're Gold/Bisquit, right?
Taken at Goodwood, 2006:
Thats Yellow!
I'm going with the Gold (Indycals), for two reasons. One, I remember the JPS Lotus as being Gold, and two, it just looks better!
And I'm using this (there are more) as my referance:
I guess it depends on what you want to build.
Cheers guys

This kit has convinced me I have a lot to learn. It's also convinced me to never bother with a Revell kit ever again. Although it is character building, as my Dad would phrase it. Gives a greater appreciation for how good the Tamiya kits really are.

The one REALLY nice thing about the Revell kits if you DO build them there is plenty of room for detailing. They are also the basis for alot of very nice trans kits....Quikskins AURORA GTS-1, BHP ENTERPRISES 1993 Trans Am Mustang, also a Trans Am Jaguar Rocketsports among a couple others campaigned just not sure of the year and Jaguar model. I had a lot of luck with the Rocketsports Olivetti Oldsmobile Darin Brassfield drove. I posted some photos of it awhile back. Oh one more caster PENGWEN not positive of this spelling offered Merkur XR4Ti's and the Cougars that Roush ran. The chassis was great to use as an IMSA or Trans Am project. Lots of possibilites for open imagination here....trust me😉

And if I really get ambitious, maybe a couple of the MFH kits if I can find a deal. So really I prefer the bigger scale and resulting (hopefully) higher quality. My ventures in "small" scale stuff are limited, I thought I'd try this one mainly as a practice run for a 1/25th F5000 car I want to build. Believe me if I could find the parts I'd do it in 1/12th too, lol. I also have a limitation with supplies. All my stuff is sized for 1/20th and up!
cheers mate

Well, after considerable modifications - like chopping 25% off the firewall so it could fit and not interfere with the body - and gluing everything with various Insta-Cures and Gorilla glue, the chassis is done. It won't come apart, thats for sure. All in all, its actually quite nice when its together. I didn't add any extra details, they wouldn't be seen anyway with the body on, but the basic kits not bad for a 1/25th. Still, I think I'll try to avoid Revell, unless its somethink really unique. Of course, now that its close to finished I figured out which glue actually works - Murphy's law. Now, to face all those pinstripes........

Paul,
Welcome to the Revell Mustang show. One of the issues that I came across in my research is that there's several restorations and no two seem to be the same. plumbing is different, as is the color of the decals. Just getting the Revell kit assembled has been a journey of the good, the bad, and the ugly.
In any event, I'm really impressed at how far and how fast you've gotten with your build. The completed chassis looks fantastic. Are you going to leave the front shell off or glue it in place? Mine doesn't fit well enough at this point to just go with removable. I'm finishing up the engine and then comes the firewall and dash. Sure hope I don't have to deal with having to cut it to get the correct fit. Did you have any issues with the exhaust headers and the exhaust pipe alignment?
Like you, I'm not so sure that I'll be building any more Revell kits anytime soon, and I still have the Whale Tail Mustang version, plus the Camaro which other then the body and engine is the same exact kit.
One thing with the Indy Cal decals, is that the black just fads away and matches the gloss black paint after glossing.
Can't wait to see your finished model.

I've painted the body and started some decalling. For someone who's not so hot on decals, this is to say the least, interesting. Did I mention I hate pinstripes? Anyway, I've got this far:
A test fit of the body seems OK so far.

Paul, Simply a fantastic build. Agreed that the decaling with all the stripes is not only time consuming, but nerve racking at the same time. I'm sure that your finished body shells will look perfect.
As for the body shells fitting, well, the front would need a little shall we say persuading, and the rear shell might need the top of the frame sanded like you had to do from a few dry fittings. I also managed to paint the air clearer flat White as I was looking at engine pictures of the Motorcraft Roush Mustang, so that's going to have to be repainted.
I'm really looking forward to your next update.
Joel
