This is the old Tamiya 1/12th kit, I'm sure you've all seen before. I started the engine quite a while ago, got distracted and it sat in the box 'til now. But since I was painting and decalling the Mustang I figured I'd do the Honda chassis while I was at it (I had the Indycal decals already). I don't know what to do. I tried assembling some body parts, everything fit fine, but something just didn't look right. I now realize the monocoque has a slight torsional twist to it. The parts are just slightly warped, probably from 50 years of having the box kicked around and squashed by several owners. It fits perfectly, with some persuasion, I just don't know if all four wheels will hit the table. However, I am proceeding. Supposed to represent Surtees' 1967 3rd place car from Kyalami, the best result the car ever got. I can already tell why, the whole body next to the Lotus 49 looks plain fat and bulky, probably heavy too. Great driver wasting his talents. If you're wondering about his win at Monza, that car was actually a Lola chassis, the RA 300 I believe they called it. If I could find a 1/12th Lola indycar I would love to build that hybrid! Pictures to follow.

So far. Tamiya Racing White base, a combination of Tamiya kit decals plus Indycals, 3 coats of clear. I'm sort of getting the hang of this, at least the clear coat didn't melt the paint underneath this time.
Wish ne luck

Got this one built already... probably going to go through a rebuild when I get done with the Ferrari project... so I am projecting a build date of somewhere in 2025! LOL!

I had the engine started a while ago. Just added some wiring and plumbing, I'll do the rest after its in the chassis. I assembled the exhaust and tacked it together but not to the motor yet. I think it will be smarter to install the engine and rear suspension first and then re-install the exhausts. I had some fun getting that mess to fit properly, but it does! I didn't have any flat white paint left, so rather than wait I painted them Testors gloss white and then a flat white clear coat. I kind of like the effect.
Now for some chassis work.

I have the Hasegawa RA272E kit in 1/24 scale. Looking forward to your build. The Tamiya 1/20th version is also a very nice kit. I'd like to scoop up the 1/12th version but they're too pricey for my budget.

Tamiya fine white primer is what I use for flat white.

Tamiya fine white primer is what I use for flat white. A little pricey at $11.95 a can... that could buy you two of the rattle can flat whites...

Nice work on the engine. The ignition wires and tie downs look particularly well done.

Thanks for the replies. I have managed a little progress. If anyone is building this car I would recommend NOT following the instructions as far as the order of doing things. (I have 2 sets to work from, both Tamiya's, and they're both different anyway!). I installed the engine assembly BEFORE I built the suspension. No reason not to and why risk breaking something delicate. I've added some plumbing and a little wiring and a few extra parts, the cars differed a lot as they evolved so what's authentic is a matter of preferance really. I think I'm pretty close. I loved the subject matter, and in fairness for one of Tamiya's earliest efforts it's a pretty good kit, just needs a bit more care and innovation than some others. Anyway, his is where I'm at.

One thing I'm having trouble with. Getting the right colour for the wheels. Nothing from Tamiya or my Testors stash looks even close. As you can see from the photo of Richie Ginthers car, the wheels were raw magnesium. I might have to bite the bullit and go with Alclad lacquer which I absolutely hate using (that stuffs designed to kill you quickly). I'm currently trying to strip the chrome plating off them. We'll see.

Maybe Tamiya X-31 Titanium Gold? You could tint it to dial in the color you are looking for.

The Honda is done. Quite a few mistakes and blemishes, It won't be entering any contests - not that I was going to anyway. But I think, not too bad, she looks good on the shelf. A special car to me, sort of my tribute to John, one of the best ever and a class act.
The wheels ended up being Alclad Magnesium, not sprayed but dipped. Close as I could come, not a bad effect.
