I haven't been working on my race cars, lately, because I've been distracted by this one. It's the old Monogram 1/24 RX-7, reissued by Revell a few years ago. The molding and fit has been excellent. I tried Splash Paint's custom mixing service for the correct Mazda silver. I'm impressed with the paint and will keep ordering from them in the future. I just finished masking the body and rear window part so I can paint the black bits. I also still have to paint the engine and engine bay. Ben

Looking good. One of my favorite 'real' cars.

Finally finished it! I'm sort of wishing I'd painted it Spark Yellow. The silver looks great on the 1/1 car, but is a little too monochrome on a model. I'll post some better pics when I get around to doing a photo shoot with the DSLR. Ben

Sweet! Great build. I love the 1st generation Rx7. Still kick myself for not buying one when they came out. I'll be looking for one of these at the hobby shop this weekend! MJ

I know its an old post, but when I saw 1st Gen RX-7 I had to look. I owned 3 of these at one time. I also autocrossed and did a small amount of racing in SCCA as well. This is a dead ringer for the silver one I had. 1St Gen was the lightest and was great with the later GSL-SE 13B motor. This one really brings back some great memories thats for sure. Great build !

How did I miss this? Love it! That was one of my dream new cars from my youth.

Thanks, guys! The 1st gen was/still is one of my dream cars. If I didn't already have a 2-seater in the garage, I'd probably be actively looking for one. Maybe someday, although prices are going up. When I was in high school, a friend's dad got one of the first ones in town. It was spark yellow. He made the mistake of giving the keys to my friend, and we took turns driving the daylights out of it for a day. It was a rocket compared to the MGB I was driving at the time!
There's one thing about the model that I didn't notice until I sat it down next to my Tamiya Miata. The wheels are too large. They scale out to 15", instead of 13, to fit Monogram's standard size tire. It looks jacked-up next to the Miata. There is a guy on eBay who sells some correctly-sized resin wheels for a 1981+ GS. I've thought of "upgrading" mine.
