From what I could tell while researching this project, the car has treaded tires in the earlier shots, but in the shots I planned to model, the car had slicks. I had a hard time finding big and little slicks that fit the bill, but I ended up finding some I thought I would try from a resin caster who happens to have a questionable reputation. I asked for a rush so I could get them in time for the GSL in 2011. I surprisingly got them in time, but this is what I got: They were junk, but I thought I would see what I could do with them anyway. So I got out the slot car tire machine to try and true them up. In the end, they might be passable for some other project, but not for one where I have so much time invested. I went a different direction. More on that later…

Since most of this post so far has taken place a couple of years ago, I’m going to make a long story a little shorter so I can get up to speed with where I am today. I was originally trying to get this done for the 2011 GSL, but a few things just didn’t live up to my expectations. I tried to get this done in my hotel room at GSL, but given the issues I was running into, I put it on ice. One of the things I wasn’t happy with was the paint. I used enamels and masked off the striping and it wasn’t bad, but it was as good as I would have liked considering the effort I had into it at that point. So I brought it home, stripped the body, and regrouped. I bought some HOK base coats and some urethane to try on the body this time, but having never used it I thought I would try it out on a test body and get the process down. Then I thought , since I had so much work in this body, that I would just build an earlier version of the car when they ran treaded tires and a slightly different livery on the car. So that’s what I did, and finished it last April. Here are a few shots of the test car. I was fairly pleased with the paint on this version, but the pinstripe that goes around the hood and tail graphic was not quite as good as I had hoped, so I wanted to look for another solution. Some shortcuts on this car versus ther main car- resin headers to aluminum tube instead of solder, no brakes, no oil coolers, and ink-jet decals. It also has treaded kit tires as run earlier in the season, although they are too narrow to be accurate.

Since I couldn’t find suitable tires, I decided to try my hand at making my own. I thought I would start with an AMT stock car tire. It wasn’t exactly the right size for either the front or the rear, but was a good starting point to make a master from. Even though I would likely sand off the raised Goodyear lettering, It has some other small lettering on the side that adds to the realism. The only problem is, it says “Stock Car Special”, not “Sport Car Special” like I need. I got out the magnifying glass and a sharp #11 to see if I could fix that. It turns out I was able to. Here’s the original sidewall. Luckily the letters on the tire have the correct letters to spell “Sports”, so I cut some off of some other tires. I used some flat clear lacquer and a small brush to affix the new letters to the master. Here’s the end result.

Thanks, guys! After I stripped the body, I painted it with House of Kolor white base coat. Masked off the white areas for the black coat, again with HOK black base coat. On my first attempt with enamels, and my second attempt on the test car, I used tape to mask off the pinstripe around the graphics. On this one, the only pinstripe I masked off was on the wheel wells. So, to get the pinstripe, I had an Alps decal made by Gary Sleeper of gwsdecals.com which was a black line and a white line together, using a scan of the VRM sheet as a guide. Gary was great to work with and I recommend him to anyone. I drew the rest of the graphics myself (although he sharpened up the Valvoline and SCCA logos for me), but Gary printed them for me and they turned out great. Unfortunately, I didn't snap any pics of the body decaled up before assembly, but here are the stripes.
