Paul, The exhaust headers came out looking as used but not abused ones should indeed look. joel Thanks Joel, as you know that's what I try for. In this case, a coat of red oxide primer, a coat of copper, two light mist coats of smoke and two coats of flat clear. I should have gone heavier on the smoke, but overall I'm happy enough. Cam covers on the Lotus always seem to look scruffy, but I might have overdone it a bit on this one. We'll call it a well used Cosworth.

Paul, The cam covers look pretty darn good to me. Slightly worn but well taken care of. Not what I would call scruffy by any means.

A few more hours of work. One complaint, the oil cooler on this car is right at the front. Tamiya gives you a piece of rubber tubing to run front to back under each sidepod. Apart from looking stupid, it's wrong. There were 2 metal tubes that ran under the car tucked up against the central chassis, with rubber lines on each end. So I've come up with this:
No, it's not electrical wire, although that might work too. It's a styrene tube bent to shape with a wire CA'd to one end to receive the rubber flex tube, and a styrene pin on the other to fit the hole in the suspension support that strangely enough, is on the kit? OK, it's progress.

I have this pic in my research folder.....
so of course I had to take this one:
My shop is a lot cleaner than Lotus.

Pretty much all the mechanical bits are done:
I thought it deserves to have it's underside shown:
And now the dreaded body and paint (and pinstripes). So far, it's putting up a fight.

Paul, The correction to the oil cooler pipes really is a major plus and came out perfect. Love your comparison side pics with those complex radiator pipes. Looks like you shrunk down the real deal to 1/12 scale.
I'm betting that the gloss black paint job and decaling comes out to the same high standards as what you've done earlier on the Lotus 78.

Well, it's done, and I for one am glad. This build started off so nicely, and by the time I got it finished I was wishing I was building another Heller Ligier. It seemed every little body part was off just enough that nothing fit properly, and lining up those pinstripes didn't help matters. However, an acceptable end result but no show winner that's for sure. Lots of little flaws if you look closely, and I'm in no mood to go back and fix them. Probably make it worse anyway!!
For once (being a black car) I took it outside to shoot it in natural light, it looks more real that way.
In keeping with the "race worn" look, I used the oldest scruffiest set of rubber I had, I think it suits it.
more to follow.

The decals are Indycals, but for the Tamiya kit with photoetch, which mine isn't. Micheal said they won't fit my kit as there are some differences, and he was right as always. They're a bit too big in some places, but correctable. The rear wing endplates for instance, the pinstipe is one decal. I cut them each into 7 pieces to fit this car, extra time but it worked. (I wanted Ronnie's car so it was the only way to do it).
One of the most stylish if slightly evil looking race cars ever designed!

Some close ups
I was so pleased with how the chassis turned out, but....
That's all folks, thanks for tuning in.
Now to build something different, I need a change
cheers

Paul, WOW !!!!!!!
I'm just super impressed how the Lotus 78 turned out. All the extra effort, and added details have paid off in Spades. Great adaption of the Indy Cal decals as one would never known or guessed that they didn't fit as they were for a different kit. As I've said numerous times, paint finish and decals are in my book: A+
In real life a true Formula 1 classic, and you've produced a true classic in model form.
