That’s really looking awesome!! I love everything attached and nestled down into the tube frame. Such a great look.

Kyle, Thanks so much for stopping by and posting. The look is so 1950 era, but it does have that certain panache to it.

Paul, Thanks for stopping by and checking out my super slow progress on the 300 SL. Getting a thumbs up from a builder of your Caliber is just that much more motivation not to cut any corners at this stage of the build.

Finally finished up the engine bay and chassis. Took a lot of time as the Tamiya's instructions certainly aren’t up to today’s standards. Way to many arrows curving one way then another, and I just love those dash lines to represent where a part goes behind something less, so it’s a lot of guess work and dry fitting. More then once I made the wrong decision, but was able to correct each one. Now on to the wheels, hub caps, and tires. Sounds easy, but the Hub caps are proving to be quite a challenge to paint correctly. More on that in my next update. Here’s a few pictures of the completed chassis and engine compartment. joel

Beautiful progress. That fully completed chassis is a work of art. Great work.

That is awesome. It's almost a shame to cover up that tube chassis with a body.

Kyle, Thanks for the thumbs up, but the credit goes to Tamiya for designing the tube chassis that even I could assemble and have it look that good.
JC, Thanks for stopping by, and liking what I've accomplished to date. The build has exceeded my expectations especially since the Tamiya kit is rather a older kit.
Paul, I'm leaving off the complete bottom plate so that you can at least see the tube chassis from the bottom up. Just might have a mirror glued down to the base for that purpose.

Time for another small update. This time it’s all about tires, wheels, and hub cabs. For mostly a race car modeler, hub caps is something I never deal with. And these turned out to be a project that I just wasn’t expecting. The kit hub caps come molded on the Chrome sprue which I expected, and just didn’t pay much attention to them until it was Tire/Wheel/Hub Cap time. Now this is how they’re supposed to look: Inside is the Body color, while the outside ring stays Chrome. But just to make it a little more interesting, the Mercedes 3 pointed star and the raised circle around it are Chrome. Took several attempts, but finally settled on hand painting the Red with well thinned Tamiya X7 Gloss Red paint, then very carefully polishing both the star and the circle till the Chrome was exposed. The only issue was that I just couldn’t get the Chrome exposed all the way to the base of the hub cap. Here’s how the whole wheel assembly looks installed on the axles. Not perfect by any means, but it’s the best that I can do. joel

That’s a pretty tough look to recreate in scale. I probably would’ve gone about tackling it in a similar fashion as well. Once you get everything all together this is all going to look awesome.

I would have sprayed them red, then taken some thinners and wiped the paint off the raised parts, and totally made a mess of everything. The chassis looks fabulous. Nice work fitting all that inside the tube frame.

Kyle, thanks for the thumbs up. Still the interior to go, which is something I've rarely done much with as it's not exactly the high point of a race car, so I'm treading ever so lightly and slow to minimize my errors and goofs.
