The Bug. This replica of the first rail dragster was built in the late 1980s. The only photos I have of it are from Scale Auto Enthusiast issue #88, from an article by Ted Struse. The model has resided in The Don Garlits Museum of Drag racing since 1992. It won the Replica class at Salt Lake in 1990, and won the Best Replica Master Award at the Southwest Challenge in Dallas, later that year.

Didn't this car inspire the term "rail" to describe a dragster?

It did, indeed. I was told the story both by Garlits and by C.J. "Pappy" Hart, who actually coined the term the first time Dick Kraft showed up with it, in this configuration, to race. Hart told Kraft, "You can't race this. It's nothing but a pair of rails. It's just a dragster!"

Obviously safety was a very minor consideration when this car was built. Kick the tires and light the fires! That is a really cool model.

That is a nice model, Dan! I agree, Rob, you needed some big ones to drive that thing. Makes those old midgets we watched Saturday look safe.
