Observations of a 12 yr old kid - me - at Watkins Glen. John Surtees was as nice a guy as you could ask for. He talked to me like I was the kid next door, and rapidly became my favorite driver. Jo Siffert had dinner at the table next to us, and chatted away with us all through it. Great guy. Hill and Clark were aloof, Gurney was nowhere to be seen. People have different personalities. It's not a European thing, at Mosport for the sports cars, Lloyd Ruby was a blast, friendly, never shut up. Foyt was an *** hole. 2 texans and totally different. McLaren and Hall were nice guys. As for running in to eachother, that's common practice in American racing. You don't even get penalised for it.

Minor progress. Used the "leather" that came with the kit for the upholstery for the seat and associated parts. Not too impressed. Looks out of scale to me, almost like fur! I ordered some thin craft leather from ebay...think I'll give that a go, instead.

Hmmmm… I don't recall the leather being that fuzzy in my kit from 20 years ago. I will have to look! This reminds me that the next rebuild project will be to take the main body (or at least the top) from my 641/2 and reshoot it. But since it would probably be an off color, I guess I will be stripping the whole thing and reshooting ALL the red!

Ok, folks...here we go! My aftermarket stuff arrived this morning and oh boy...what a haul! We got exhaust gaskets, valve stems, brake calipers, brake bleeder screws and banjo bolts(!), exhaust and cooling pipes, seat belt hardware, radiators, heat shields, electrical fittings, brake rotors, toggle switches, carbon fibre decals, hose fittings and a whole bunch of other stuff....and I'm still waiting for a couple of other things!! Just got to thinking about how if it wasn't for the internet... The kit, primer and paint are from Japan, decals from Spain, US and Italy, photoetch from the US and Australia...most definitely an international build made totally possible by the internet! 20 years ago, it would have taken years to find all this stuff, if at all. Pretty amazing, actually! Plus, I get to hang out with a bunch of like-minded individuals who are pretty cool, too! So....off to the bench I go. Got the rest of today and all day tomorrow to get things sorted and ready to roll for this beast. Should be fun....I hope!

That's going to be quite some car Mike. You going to auction it at Sotheby's when it's finished?

I am so glad we met over on ScaleMates and you joined up here where your work gets viewed by some very talented individuals. As far as bleeding Ferrari Red, personally, I have always been drawn to anything that is brightly colored and goes fast whether it is the Blue Angels, Miss Budweiser unlimited Hydroplane, the STP trubine car from Indy, or any one of a number of F1 cars. The Benneton cars were amazing and the car shown at the top of this page was also a favorite with that 7Up green and the red dot. I would be hard pressed to say which is my favorite. I would probably go with the Marlboro sponsored McLarens of the Prost/Senna era. They were so striking with that day-glo red. I look forward to seeing what all this aftermarket yields. I am sure it will be amazing!

Just a couple of minor updates.... Making a little progress on the motor. Added some photo-etch details...exhaust flanges, drive axle rings, hose attachment points, etc. Removed molded hose joints at the back (where the braided line attaches) and replaced with Top Studio resin hose joints and added Top Studio braided hose. Still miles to go but coming along.... Started cleaning up the exhaust pipes that came as die-cast replacements from Thundervalley. Gonna take a lot of work...12 separate pipes plus collectors. Spent almost an hour just on this one pipe. And of course, my Dremel tool sh*t the bed, so I'll either have to do them by hand or wait until some cash magically appears so I can buy a new tool.

Mike, Love how your both enhancing the kit details, and adding details as needed. As for that one exhaust pipe, I'm super impressed at the results you've achieved. And I do feel you pain about your Dremel packing it in. I've gone through two Dremels over the last 40 years, neither used all that much, but at times I truthfully asked way more of them, then they were designed for. One day, I'll have to replace them with #3.

Just a quick little FYI if anyone is wondering....I haven't given up on this project but I haven't touched it for almost a month, either! I work in an automotive repair/retail shop and we are in the middle of "winter tire season" here in Canada plus the Christmas fools...err, I mean shoppers, are coming out of hibernation, so I have been working stupid hours lately. The paychecks are nice but who's got time to spend them? Anyway, I haven't been at the desk for a bit for another reason....I recently got a good deal on a larger desk so with what time I do have, I have been rearranging furniture. I needed to move the old desk which lead to moving more stuff which meant I had to move other stuff and so on...it's been fun. I'm still picking up odds and ends here and there, little itty bitty nuts and bolts, carbon decals, etc., and will start posting pics again when the dust settles.....cya all then!

Mike_t I really feel your pain. I was a Retail Drug Store manager for almost 40 years, and the holiday season was by far the worst of the worst. A million hours per week was the norm. But we were salaried, so we never got a dime for all the extra hours.
Now I'm retired, and every day is like another vacation day. A vacation that just never ends. Too bad that the Honey To Do list never gets any smaller.
Looking forward to your next update on the build.

Working in the Pep Boy's stores at Christmas really ruined it for me, selling, assembling between 500 to 1000 Bicycles, and having them waiting for pick up on Christmas eve, got home on Christmas eve usually at 10pm or so depending on those last couple of idiots who had to have it when little Johnny wakes up but didnt think to pick it up earlier.. what a pain Yup SALARIED TOO!!! to top it off, Getting Home Dog Ass tired , trying to entertain Family, and then finding my EX in bed with an un-named member of the Family... kinda put a damper on Christmas Forever........Chris
