After getting the holidays out of the way, rearranging my model room to fit the new desk, going through 4 replacement people at work in the last month (what is wrong with young people's work ethic these days? ) and being off sick with the flu for 2 weeks, I finally got a chance to sit down and start breathing life into this kit again! First up, if you recall, I wasn't overly impressed with the "leather" for the seats that came with the kit. It is pictured on the left. I ordered a small sheet from ebay but that looked like a piece of a couch cover or something, not even close to what they called leather! Anyway, went to Michael's Craft Store and found a piece that's even darn near close to the real color and it is genuine leather and whole lot less fuzzy! That's it on the right...much happier. Still need to finish the belts and of course, now that I've had a chance to really look at them, I'm beginning to not like the belt material. It is the original stuff from the kit...maybe I'll try something else. I've done a little bit to the engine. Added the small rad at the rear, got a bit of preliminary wiring in. Yes, they will be prettied up and tucked away . Added the control arms and a few other bits and pieces. Still a long trek on this.... And, got some foil on the monocoque. Going to do some carbon fibre decals in a few areas yet. That's about it for now...still have another day off this week so might be able to get a bit more time on it.

Mike_t, Progress is always just that. Nice start to the engine and transmission. Same for the monocoque. I'm confused about the foiling just along the edges. Will the CF decals over lap there?

Joel Thanks, Joel... The CF won't be along the side. You'll notice in this pic, the pipes along the side are reflected in what almost looks like a mirror. I have some ideas for that, or I may just add more aluminum tape. The aluminum they sent with the kit has patterns on the back that you cut out and the strips along the edge were just that. As I mentioned, it's a start...still a long way to go on this fella.

Mike, You large scale guys have some reference library for sure.
Under the exhaust headers sure looks like some kind of exotic heat shield from those days. And the tape seems to be their low tech way of sealing the Aluminum tops and side, if indeed it's polished aluminum sheet.
Love work that you and pnance26 are posting.
I could have easily made the case with self debating to move up to 1/12 scale or include one super build per year in my constantly changing build schedule. But it sure seems to me that for the most part there's no real new 1/12 kits coming out. 1/32 aircraft kits once a viable market is exactly in the same position with the occasional new Tamiya release, with years of various versions (and no I don't build aircraft since I moved to cars). I was really excited about the Meng 1/12 scale Ford GT until the details started to come out. Absolutely no interest in a snap tite, pre-painted kit, and I'm sure it's not very well detailed. Strange that it's still not on the market, as the movie has basically had its big screen run.

Strange that it's still not on the market, as the movie has basically had its big screen run. Joel It does make it easy to look stuff up but I seldom do... unless it is a weird suggestion. And you are correct. After Mr. Tamiya died, and the licensing costs went through the roof, big scale F1 went out the window! I think the most recent car put out in 1/12th was the Williams FW14 or maybe the McLaren MP4/6 of Ayrton Senna... and that was a number of years ago. There are several I would love to find (at a reasonable price) such as the Tyrell 4 wheeler and the other Lotus 49B with the wing. I did omit MFH and their newer entries but who can afford $1K for a kit? Not me! I put them in another whole different category than what an amateur builder can afford. Those kits come with 60 piece engine assemblies. For that price, I would expect it to kick over with a starter! I like big scale because I can actually see my results. I don't like doing a bunch of stuff in a cockpit or under a hull only to cover them all up. And I could go crazy with all the PE and stuff such as Mario Covalski does over at the modeler site (he insists on accuracy for the kit... then does a tutorial and charges for that!) but I would never get through, with my lack of hours. Take my next week off... I have Thursday (hopefully my class prep is done), then Friday I teach, Saturday we are going to see Poco in Modesto, Sunday going to Sacramento to see my BIL because my wife asked, Monday travel home, Tuesday, maybe get some painting done if possible, Wednesday maybe some time but I will have chores to do... and then back to work. So, of my week off, I may get two days... and then it takes paint time to dry, and cure, and mask, and sand... I am not at all happy with the rear wing joints... But thanks for the good words. I know Mike jumped into this 1/12th thing but I have built around 10 now, and have about 15 more! I'll be buried with CA on my fingertips!

Thanks, guys...
Yes, Pat, this is my first foray into the 1/12 world and I gotta say, it's pretty decent! I think, as I get older and the eyes and hands aren't what they used to be, big scale is easier to work with. On the other hand, there is so much more detailing possibility that I find myself wanting to add zip ties and weld seams...but that just takes me back to little tiny things, so it kinda goes full circle.
I have seen a few other 1/12 kits online in the 100 dollar range which isn't too bad but now my problem is, where do I put them? The cabinet I have for displaying is damn near full and I really don't want to spend hours and hours building something, only to put it away in the box. Kinda defeats the purpose. I've been looking at cabinets and display cases but wow...the prices some people want, you would think they were hand carved from gold ingots! And, I'm no good with carpentry, nor do I have the tools, so building my own is not an option and having one custom made? Well, again, the old wallet would pucker up on that one, too!
As for the reference stuff, Joel, I have about 150 various shots of the 641/2 on my computer but the downside is they are of different versions of the car. The Prost and Mansell cars had their differences plus I have pics of restored cars that have different sponsors, different tires, etc. so it's hard to choose sometimes which is correct and which isn't. I'll basically end up with a car that isn't 100% accurate to one particular chassis but a combination of what actually ran during the season, to little details that I like that may be on Prost's car but not on Mansell's. It doesn't really matter to me, as long as I'm happy with the end result.

I heard too much of the "Pat" character on SNL for me to like it). I don't know if you saw the pics of my 1/12th builds up high on a shelf. Years ago, I worked in a carpentry shop and had access to shiny laminates and plenty of plywood off fall. There was also a place in Dallas that I got my plexicases made for a reasonable amount. So I have some bases left with no covers. They do take up space not only when they are built but also when they are just sitting. Did you ever see my "pile"? This is an old photo... I have rebuilt the T4 on the top and refurbed the 641/2 and put it up on the shelf as well as one or two of the others. The MP 4/2 has been refurbed as well... those are 1/25th scale NASCAR in front so there is quite a bit of difference in size! So yes, storage and display is a problem. I wish I could find the photo of my "pile". It's somewhere... Here is just the Ferrari portion... of this pile, the T4 is done (another entire used kit inside the box) and the 312B is the one I am working on... just a few more years and I'll be done! I have completed most of the Wolf and the Tyrrell P34 is also a duplicate kit but this one has PE! The MATRA MS11 is an interesting kit. Oh my God, I have so many kits and so little time! Sorry to hijack your thread. You can see my 641/2 poking it's nose out in the first photo so there is a link! LOL!

No problem. We've discussed heart attacks, work woes and a bunch of other stuff in this thread so going on about models is quite ok! And yes, I believe your "pile" was posted on Scalemates? When we first met...I was on the fence about 1/12 and seeing your post over there kinda swayed me a bit, so thanks

Guys, My display is nothing more then a metal storage shelf system which I'm about to buy the 2nd one. I also buy those plastic Triumph displays that are all plastic. I've downsized from the 1/20 scale size for everything, to the smaller 1/24 scale ones for that scale, and will use the freed up 1/20 scale ones for my 1/20 scale F1 builds. Prices vary all over the place, but just start looking at all your modeling sites.

Mike, I bought that kit in the box from a woman for $50 as a partially assembled kit. The story is her dad started it so I have no idea when or where he bought it. I just wanted the main body and side pods. There is nothing wrong with the old stuff, it just all needs stripping and then some love!
It was in pretty good shape for a donor kit. The problem is he had assembled the engine and rear end without painting the engine block or the transmission. They were left raw. If you ever have a hankering for salvaging a T4, I'll gladly give it to you for the shipping. It;s virtually a complete kit but the body will need to be stripped down to the plastic. It is complete with tires, wheels, all the parts.
Let me know if you want a real adventure!
To be honest, I never even saw that price tag! LOL!

Just throwing this out there guys as it was sparked by all the Tire Decal discussion in this post - I have a bunch of sheets of Goodyear tire decals if anyone is looking for some in a certain scale just drop me a line and I can see if I have them handy. I stencil all mine so I have a bunch of sheets kicking around.
Cheers,
Adrian

Adrian Adrian, I've never used a tire stencil and just got them from Gemini in Italy. What is the best way to apply them? I can post a photo of the stencils if it would help. Thanks.
