I've never documented an entire build before like you guys, so please be kind. Also this is my first try at a 1/12th scale car. I decided to do it backwards by doing all the body and paint first.
A bit of history. It's supposed to represent M23 no 1, as driven to pole position at its first race by Denny Hulme - Kyalami South Africa 1973. Hence car no 5, Denny's traditional number. It was switched to 7 from then on. Also Gulf sponsorship, etc which was later dropped. To me the M23 was the last real McLaren. Anything after MP4, well I really detested Ron Dennis. And I liked Denny, he was a good guy.
So wish me luck.
Paint, decals and clear coat done..

The paint and decals look excellent! Tell us how you really feel about Ron Dennis.

Articwolf, Excellent job on painting, decaling, and finish. When ever I can I do the body work 1st, then build the rest of the kit. Looking forward to your next update.

Really excellent paint & decal work! Tamiya is one of the few brands I'd dare do the body and paint work on before fitting things to the chassis, their fit is usually very good. Just one small nit to pick, the Hulme S. Africa GP pole winner used the square opening airbox, like the one in the Marlboro kit. I have this same kit on my bench now, along with the MTR Speed conversion/detail kit for it. All the references I have found show the other type of airbox. I MAY have an extra airbox if you are interested. Let me know! Keep up the great work!

I figured I could always replace it if I found the right one later. So yes, I sure would be interested!

Well, this has been interesting. I have been working from 3 sets of instructions (one in Japanese that came with the kit), and all 3 are different. I guess different issues or re-releases,I don't know. The parts are all the same, but different numbers, the sprues are laid out differently, and extras? I picked the McLaren to start with mainly because I've built lots of M23's and M19's before (smaller scale) so I know the car. Some mistakes as expected but nothing radical, the worst part was working with 40 yr old decals. I have the sub assemblies done and the ever present Cosworth DFV built, on to some assembly work next. The odd part is I have leftover a spare set of injectors, velocity stacks (chrome), roll bar, battery, couple of other odds and ends, and no, I didn't forget them. I might just have a use for them later!
anyway, up to date:

Arcticwolf, I'm really impressed with how the Cosworth engine looks. And the tub of the shell is equally as well done. You're a way braver man then I to use 40 year old decals. If you have a decal issue, Indy Cals has decals for them.

Hi Joel, yes I knew Indycals had them, but I thought I'd give the originals a shot. A bit fragile but OK with a bit of touch-up. Honestly if I built it again I would paint that Yardly "Y" emblem on the nose. A few goof-ups but overall not to displeased for my "practice run". I think I might try my Lotus next.

I've got the Mauri 1/24 M23 and am torn between doing the F1 car of Peter Revson or the F5000 car (using a Leyland V8) as raced Down Under before converting back to classic F1. Anyway, How did you paint the exhausts?

Arcticwolf, Just an outstanding build. As Chris said, it's a real stunner. Looking forward to your next 1/12 scale build

I have an old build of the Hunt M23 that I don't like. I'd love to convert it into an M25, if I can ever find a Chev or Ford small block in 1/20th. Or I have an M19 half built in 1/25th I just might make into a "fantasy" F5000 just for fun. The original M25 certainly had an interesting history!
OK, the exhausts. It's Testors copper base coat, and after it dries for like a week or so, it's a thin coat of Tamiya Smoke X19 brushed on. After they're installed they need the inevitable touch up so another light coat where needed. X19 is very transparent so the more you put on the darker it gets, brushing gives it that slight uneven look. The idea was to make it look like heat discoloured metal, you know "slightly used". I did an Indy car that way and then a coat of flat clear over it, but I prefer it with the gloss I got on this car. I'm always experimenting.
regards
Paul
