Oh my eyes! Is it just me or does that look like an explosion at a jelly bean factory?

I really like the old school picture. But where is it? When? Inquiring minds want to know.

I wonder what a modern race tire would grip like on the cobblestones.

I really like the old school picture. But where is it? When? Inquiring minds want to know. Hans Stuck en route to winning the 1938 Großglockner Grand Prix in an Auto Union Typ C. '38 and the quality and style of the image reminds me of photographs by either George Monkhouse or Louis Klementaski. Monkhouse was Kodak's chief engineer and representative in Europe at that time and chronicled Grand Prix racing in his books Motoraces (Published 1937), Motor Racing With Mercedez-Benz (Published 1938 of the '37 Grand Prix season) and other books subsequently in the postwar years. Klementaski was a free-lance photographer who in the pre-war years sold his photos to newspapers, motor racing magazines and to private individuals, often racing drivers. Klementaski shot most of his photos in the then relatively new "miniature" 35 mm format. Monkouse preferred the large format 4x5 medium but worked in various sizes depending on the conditions, in order to develop and prmote his employers' products. They knew each other and Klementaski helped Monkhouse pioneer the first color racing photographs, even finding ways to use the notoriously slow film (eventually called Kodachrome) to take pictures of the cars at speed. Both of them composed large atmospheric shots like this one, whose fine grain and sharp focus indicate a large format negative, perhaps made using a tripod. Whoever took it, it's a beautiful photo!

I have followed the Dakar for so many years, was sad when they changed the destination a few years although, civil war, drought and the way's of the world prevails. A Dangerous Trek through some of the worst terrain anywhere by Auto and Motorcycle. A race in the Spirit of Racing since the first races in the late 1800's. Factory involvement and privateer is always great, to see how these guys do this is amazing!!! Thanks for your coverage JC I always enjoy it. Chris

In all my years of reading about endurance races and following Daytona, Sebring and LeMans in magazines ad video, I have NEVER heard of a Ferrari GTO blowing an engine. They were always outnumbered by the Cobras but usually finished in the top ten if not overall winner. Phil Hill, Pedro Rodriguez and Roger Penske (THAT Roger Penske)could run heads up with the Cobras. NART and John Mecom always had competitive cars to keep Shelby Honest (but Shelby's Boys were more Fun)! My original dated Aurora GTO will be Mecom Phelham Blue but the original builder did an EXCELLENT paint and detail on the engine and trans in a Maroon color (British Racing Maroon?)that I will leave it as a Tribute to him whoever he was (is).
