OK since I have a little experience with a couple of Scarabs I thought I would start this thread as suggested by Stokrod! On one of my many Sunday visits with Briggs Cunningham at his museum he suggested I get in the two Scarabs on display while he told me about them.. These two were the cars I was in, I could not grasp what Desmonic valves were on the front engine car, but Briggs tried to explain it. Since my Dad had built a couple of Offys for him I kinda got it. The cool thing was they were displayed with this car they were right next to the CERV I and II Chevrolet Concept racers.. Chris

Thanks Chris. Love to hear more Scarab stories. I was thinking the sportscar over the F1. That first shot on the Autopuzzle site really does it for me. The Strombecker kit did a good job of interpreting the shape IMHO. These are vintage builds. I will probably keep the painted one as is, but the bare plastic one is scheduled for a full detail build.

Yes Stokrod, the Strombecker was a very great base: And the plastic mold,so good to make the model without paints: And,certainly, this is why MiniExotics made their Scarab with the Strombecker model car... Greetings.

Thanks for those Chris. I have photographed both cars at vintage races a few years back, but haven't found the slides lately. Here is one you missed that shows interior & windshield detail and I think Chuck Daigh driving. (How does autopuzzle get such nice big photos?)

Love that box art! Thanks gwadagone. Very nice Scarab collection. I've been following a few of those recently on eBay, but bidding outdid my pocketbook.

This car was a beast that could tame the Masers and Ferraris!

And if you like the 1/43 scale, you have the excellent Spark models: The first victory in 1958 at the Santa Barbara race(06/01/58) with Lance Reventlow at the wheel: And Chuck Daigh victory at the SCCA USAC Riverside(10/12/58): Any other versions you can made with the Strombecker Slot model or the MiniExotics... Greetings.

Here are a few more from my B&W print archive that I got from Dave Friedman some years back. The Scarab F1 is labeled Monaco, April 1960. and from Nassau in late 1964 with the Scarab in the back driven by Walt Hansgen and A.J. Foyt in the Hussein with a 426 Chrysler Hemi. A little off topic, but from that same group of prints... the Hussein at the Times GP in Oct. 1964 with Foyt again. There is an AMT kit of this which I have around here somewhere. (another thread?)

The #1 Hussien is at Oakes Course for the Nassau Speed Weeks. I'll start a Hussien thread if no one minds. I did start the AMT kit some time (1 year ago) back.

Pmodwrks, desmodromic valves are valves which are closed by a rocker off the camshaft instead of a spring. Mercedes F1 cars used them in the 50s.
Leo Goosen designed the Scarab engines. He started at Buick about 1916 and went to work for Harry Miller about 1920. He designed the Miller DOHC four valve per cylinder crossflow straight eight that when supercharged produced 300hp from 91 cubic inches. He designed a four cylinder version of it that became the Offenhauser. He designed the Novi V8 before he designed the Scarab engines. He then went on to consult with Ford on the DOHC Indy engine.
I would love to get the chance to turn a couple of laps in either of the scarab F1 cars.
