What's the one in the middle for? The center lever is a Line Lock, its pulled up when the car is at the starting tree, it hydraulically locks the front brakes allowing the rear wheels to spin freely , they then do the Burn out ( heat the rear tires ) and once on the line awaiting the Green light they will use it to keep the car from rolling into the beam causing a Red light . A expert can drop it right when the the light goes from yellow to green and nail the gas at the same instant allowing a perfect green light time and launch the car perfectly giving an advantage.. Make sense? It is an awesome development of the 70's drag racing.. Good bit of information here. I always knew of the line lock feature but never had it explained like this. Thanks Chris.

Ehhhhh Thanks Chris, but I meant the middle pedal between accelerator and clutch... and it was supposed to be a joke I figured a lot of guys didnt know what it was , most have never even seen or noticed one. From 1984 to about 2005 I was heavy into Drag Racing helping several Teams on track and started the "Hi-Performance Parts Sales Dept" in the company I worked for selling some $80 million annually in Performance parts in just two years of operations. I knew pretty much everybody in Drag racing at one point and built several Drag car models that were very detailed. A lot of people dont know the engineering that goes into 1320 cars... Glad I could share the knowledge... Chris

Curious question: did trans brakes replaced line locks or do they both co-exist for things like burnouts? Back in the 60's and 70's my uncles were drag racing heavily. One of them plugged brake lines so only front wheels would brake essentially using the brake pedal as a line lock with powerglides or T400s.

Chris, Your involvement in all areas of motorsport would make for one great book, and then of course the movie. So who would you prefer to play you?

Ismael, I have never heard of both being used, mainly because the line lock leaves the rear brakes completely functional once it is released, most Drag categories for a while require 4 wheel brakes for safety reasons. But most Fuel cars (T/F, F/C, P/M) use only front brakes because of the parachute ( weight savings ). So it really depends on the Class, sanctioning body and type of car as to what they use. I have no doubt the line lock is safer that a trans brake or blocking 1/2 the brake system. Hey ! Ya Gotta Still Stop after 1320 Feet!! Chris Ps. 9.90 cars and similar use assorted electronics to increase line/light time reduction, I never really got into it that much since I was most involved in Pro Classes.. Chris

Joel, I have been offered funds to write a book, actually 2. One on Auto Racing and one on the history of Slot Cars and my Dad's shop. I tried to start jotting memories down but then I lost my Mind (LoL) and it became futile! No I have a stack of notes stashed away and sometime I will consider it. Chris

Chris, I buy both for sure. I consider myself pretty darn lucky to have met you even though it's only through the internet.

Off topic on Joe's project here, please excuse Joe.
@chris Hale....Later this summer I'd like to add a 3rd scratchbuilt dragster alongside The Old Master, and the recent Jr. Fueler. Could you please direct me to detailed photos of "The Sidewinder"? I've seen several on George Klass website, but hard to find otherwise. Truly an great car and insanely interesting.
I'm considering modeling this wonderful car. All metal.

Mike, I have the specs somewhere, and these pics are more than enough to do it, link public.fotki.com/pmodwrks/magwinder-sidewinde/ Chuck Jones is a friend after all these years and he owned it when we had it, so I think we could probably do it. I will have to wrap some builds up so I can devote time to it but it could be done. We will talk soon. Thanks Joe! Chris

Note: The New thread on the Magwinder, Joe's build is so awesome I felt we needed to separate the two treads. Thanks Joe! Keep up the great build, and use some photo etch door handles on the Dyno Don Maverick I think they would add a lot to the interior. Chris

Those door handles that are in the interior are in fact PE flat squares that I had in the spares bin that I folded at the top to give them more of a 3D look. Thanks for the comments buddy.

Well guys....I can't believe it's been almost three months since I've touched this car but I needed a dang break after that shifter ordeal. That thing kicked my a$$!!! I managed to get the seat drilled and slotted to make way for the seat belt harness. The harness build up wasn't too bad outside of me not paying attention to what I was doing at times and having to go back and make some corrections along the way. This is not the period correct harness I was hoping to build but the correct one is actually harder than the Liberty shifter that I just built for this car. I'm not about to go through anything like that again on this build. lol

Nice job on the seat modifications and the harness. Looks pretty convincing to a neophyte like me.
