In March of 1996, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace wrecked on Lap 28 of the Transouth Financial 500 at Darlington. Rusty retired from the race but Mark came back on lap 257, only 229 laps down. He finished 27th. I suffered a rather catastrophic injury to my right index fingers in the fall of 1996 and this build was my physical therapy. I had never put a saw to plastic prior to this... for reference material, I had one photo from Winston Cup Scene and you can see it on the billboard in the background. I did things I had never done before such as the "bungie cords" on the front piece of screening. The metal piece on the side, the duct tape on the rear and the side number. I tried to accurately represent the car. And Mark got a kick out it when he put his signature on the wall. BTW, I did the base with the correct angle of banking! This was a contest entry. The contest theme was "Coming Home...". My title was "Coming Home... for the Points" because points racing was still important in 1996 in NASCAR. I was up against a lot of armor and airplanes and no other cars. When I asked the judge why my car wasn't worthy, he pointed out a piece of "orange peel" about 1/8" wide in one spot near the rear window. In other words, he was the kind of guy that would criticize the Mona Lisa for one wrong brush stroke. I was so pissed because I put so much effort into an original idea. Of course, the winner was a B-17 with battle damage... how mundane. What you all think?

I really like it. It's not often you see someone thinking outside the box in regards to subject matter. I think the fact that Mark liked it and signed it is better than the opinion of some rivet-counting judge.

I really had to scrounge and this build taught me to NEVER throw anything away! That is why there are bits of stuff all over my workshop! But I'm weird that way!

When I first joined this forum I remember seeing this build as I scrolled through your work, and I think it's fantastic - great job on something that I would love to tackle one day - a historical build of a taped together 'finish the race under any circumstances' Stock car

This is probably the most radical repair job I've seen. And now, with the damage rules, this would never happen. Once you take it to the garage now, you are done!

I loved this build so much that I researched the web to try and find more photo's of Martin's car - and you're right that I could only find the one photo. You've inspired me to think about doing a similar theme build at some point

Oh trust me... I have photos of Earnhardt big wreck (the one that brought us the Earnhardt bar). I have lots of photos of it... I just haven't figured out how to simulate the crush patterns of sheetmetal as opposed to plastic. I did have one other resource and that was a videotape of the Transouth race and the wreck that I could freeze. But that was it! One stinking photo from Winston Cup Scene. I have never known to inspire anyone prior to this with much of anything. Thank you so much for that compliment. I am humbled.
