I lived in Texas for 27 years. I saw the Texas Motor Speedway built from first earth turning to first race. I followed Terry Labonte around like a groupie until one day he asked me "Are you following me?" I got to know his wife and his kids, went to countless autographs sessions... I was a real big fan. But it was ALL based on the fact that Terry raced a "red 5" on his cars which was the same as my favorite F1 driver at that time, Nigel Mansell. Mansell had a "red 5" on his Williams FW14 and that was pretty cool. Now, if you know anything about the Labonte brothers family, you know that "Daddy Bob" got them into karting, then dirt tracks, etc. on up to Cup level. That's pretty common knowledge. But what is not known is the "Daddy Bob" had a minor flirtation with drag racing... so one day, I thought "What if Terry had gotten into drag racing instead of karting?" And this is the result... it is a '57 Chevy Pro Modified with a custom trailer (I built the racks and tool box and installed the chains). The panel is '53 (I think) Chevy panel truck on which I opened the doors and added details. The tool boxes came from a Fujimi 1/24th scale garage set. The posts for the "fence line" are extra wheels from kits and the flagging itself is a little bitty flags on dental floss. I made the garbage can from old tires with an insert and made trash from round stock and vellum paper for the hot dog wrappers. The tent was my first attempt at building something like this... I had a great time building this and all the pieces parts are somewhere in stuff that hasn't been unpacked in 10 years. Maybe I will resurrect this someday... Your thoughts and comments on all my builds are always welcome...

Very very cool! I'd love to see bigger pictures. It seems there is a TON of details to enjoy there.

This is one great build/ diorama pnance. Where abouts in Tx did you/ do you live? I lived in Ponder for about 4 years. I know Ponder well. When I first moved to Texas, I lived in Denton while I attended graduate school. I then moved to Dallas up around Henderson but not on the good side! I lived on the east side in some apartments. I then moved to Arlington the first time, move back to Dallas, then back to Arlington again. All this between 1984 and 1990. I worked at several hospitals, LifeStar in Arlington, and CareFlite. I then moved to north Dallas in fall of 1990 and we bought a house in Richardson in 1996 which was my address for 13 years. Then I moved to Tehachapi. WAsn't there a place in Ponder called the Clay Pot Cookery? I know there was a great steakhouse out there in the country somewhere. One of the medics in the military at Edwards where I work now is from Roanoke! I watched TMS being built as my son and I would take trips out there just for something to do!

The steakhouse was called the Ranchman's Steakhouse. It was awesome. On Friday nights they'd have live music the form of two guys (looked like a father/ son duo). One played the banjo and they'd sing up there dang near all night long. Stuff like "The Orange Blossom Special" and the like. It was a BYOB joint. Man this is bringing up some good memories. I can't remember the Clay Pot Cookery but they did have a bank in town that was used in the 1960's Bonnie and Clyde movie. Nice and quiet place to live. Really peaceful.
