Greetings,
Long absent here, I thought I'd make a reappearance. Along with my dormant 1970 Penske Javelin builds, some time ago I took up fabrication work on a pair of Ronnie Kaplan Engineering/Javelin Racing Team Trans-Am racers and am finally making headway. For gathering rare spares and experimentation, lessons learned on one Javelin are applied to largely identical assemblies which in turn push other projects forward - if ever so slowly.
Out of sight as I pen this introduction, nevertheless my '69 season effort is looking quite coherent at this point, while the '68 isn't far behind. Scary as it is to note, about fifteen years ago I purchased a pair of glue bomb annual kits, one a Jo-Han '68 Javelin, the other, a truly wasted Jo-Han '69 Javelin. Happily the body, bumpers and interior could be restored on the '68, while only the bumpers and interior really remains on the '69. Where period kits prices have gone since is little short of insane, whereas I think I paid maybe $18 each for what it is that survives up until now. It's sobering to look upon some of the parts I have and to mull that I couldn't strictly start from scratch now given how hard it would be to source things down to the last detail.
Although largely clueless about the merits and demerits of contemporary photo hosting services, I nevertheless hope to do a small bit of research consistent with adding or resuscitating threads indifferently tended to here. I am something of a scratch building and research plodder, with global pack ice melting faster than I strictly register movement every now and again. This understood, I'm happy to share notes and gathered research consistent with helping Jo-Han updates and conversions look and feel their best. Hmm - now what would constitute a low-cost and stable third party photo hosting service these days?
Mostly I collect books and period magazines, although such resources as the Camaro Research Group, the BOSS 302 Registry, the Historic SCCA Pro Trans-Am Racing FB group page and related other FB track/venue/driver fan and remembrance pages are also reviewed in detail. I seek to gather and segregate material to support this initiative and that, and to the extent that I can establish the identity of where something was found, who wrote what and whom captured this or that image, my aim is to educate rather than alienate. Certainly I don't have everything or necessarily reach the correct conclusions even when I do, hence appreciate I'll hope to contribute labor to but also discreetly request to tap into the collective research 'hive mind' consistent with best approximating (often it's all that's possible) what 'ought' to be. Thanks for reading this missive...
