I just have a general question for you guys re PSI settings.
I have just always sprayed at 30 PSI for as long as I can remember ... this may vary from 28 to 32, but that's it.
I know some of you guys say that you are only at 16 PSI when applying coats of all kinds.
Does anyone else spray at 30 PSI? And if so what are the benefits/drawbacks or even reasons for that matter for spraying at a lower PSI?

I always spray between 20-25 psi. But keep in mind, the regulators we use may not exactly be the most precise in the world. For weathering, I sometimes go up to around 30-35 range but that is very rare.
Thanks, Ismael

I always spray at 10-12 PSI with the nozzle about an inch from the surface of the model. I think it gives me much better control of where the paint goes, the paint goes on smoother, and I don't get much overspray.

I would never think to do both that low a PSI and at such a close distance, now you've given me some food for thought.
I think I have to do a few experiments.
Thanks for sharing the info.

I spray at 25-30 psi consistently, it would be a matter pf personal preference of course, and the mixture of the paint. I picked my settings up from Walt Prey ( airbrush painter for Von Dutch ) and Gene Winfield I dont think there is an actual recommended PSI and like the Ad says "Results May Vary !" Chris

I don't change psi between initial color coats and final clear.

I met Gene many years ago at my Dads shop Santa Ana Raceways a slot car shop in about 1966 then I saw him at a few Model Shows, we talked a bit, hit it off and I let him know I was a fan of his work, his shop was in Canoga Park and I stopped occasionally to visit and B.S. ,turns out Roth, Bud Anderson, Joe Iskanderian , Von Dutch and many others turns out were long time friends of both of us. My Daughter lives in Rosamond also a few miles away and her boyfriend is close friends with Gene from what I understand. We talk when I see him and He is a Great Guy..what is he now 91 years old...Chris

There's two different PSIs when air brushing. The static setting which is the higher of the two, and the one I pay no attention to. The 2nd one is the flow rate. I thin my primer to the same consistency as the pre-thinned paints from Gravity, Zero, & MCW paints. Doesn't matter if I'm air brushing with a #3 or #5 setup. I set the flow rate on my compressor at 16 psi. I paint with even, lite coats and never stop a pass from the start to the end. For clears, my go to gloss for some time has been Mr. Color's GC46. I thin that 2 parts clear to 3 parts #400 thinner. It's pretty thin but not as thin as my primer and paint. I do increase my flow psi to 18 psi. Honestly, I don't think that the 2 psi means anything, it's just a mental thing. What I do vary is the distance from the AB to the model. The paint needs to flow on wet so it can self level, but to much paint and you end up with Orange peel.

My daughters home was owned by the Owner of the Borax Mine, it was in Mohave, Built in 1927 it was later moved to a hill top in Rosamond. She also is into Antiques so she furnished the Home in 20's & 30"s furnishings accordingly...They also collect 30's to 50's Buses and Big Rigs, she is the proud owner of a 41 White 1 1/2 ton pick up, very cool with its peaked fenders and looking like a 1/2 ton truck on steroids. Her boyfriend has a Nashville 50's GMC? Bus that has a Western Music Recording Studio built inside that is fully functional . She recently bought a Cabin just North Of Valencia in the forest also built in the late 20's she is remodeling it to be a bit more comfortable and use more modern appliances. I guess a bit of me rubbed off on her.. Chris
