I'm kinda on the fence. Change, of course, is inevitable. I kinda like the new look. I know they haven't been "stock" cars for years but this takes away one of the few remaining connections to "stock", if not the last remaining. And, of course, whine or complain, NASCAR ain't gonna listen to us. It's their show...like it or leave it, I guess. More here...

Me, too. Stage racing, Lucky Dog BS, Playoffs....come on, really? After watching Kulwicki win his title and seeing Awesome Bill make up 5 laps, things like the lucky dog are just, well, stupid!

What’s next, racing in the rain? I figured the teams would have pushed for single lug nuts years ago, to take a few fractions of a second off of their pit stops. Ben

I'm on board with not being a real fan of the 'gimmicky' format now - God I hate Stage racing. But having said that I love the racing so much that I will always continue to tune in, and I must say I do love the new cars. I love the old ones too, don't get me wrong, but I understand the change to a single lug nut - F1 has been doing it since the beginning of time, so I'm actually surprised it's taken NASCAR this long ... or am I?
Yes it's truly the end of the only thing about these cars that's truly 'stock' anymore, but look at the F1 cars ... they're spaceships now!

This is how I would change NASCAR.
1: Introduce an F1 style demerit point system for drivers and crews. If some of them get a 3 race suspension, maybe the rest would get the point and smarten up.
2: Allow the crews to design and build their own space frames, within a set of rules.
3: Car bodies can be composite material, but must match the road car exactly- no more aero gains, spoilers etc.
4: Engines must be stock block 6 cylinder or less, maximum 3.5 litres, OHC permitted, non boosted.
If this sounds like Trans Am cars running around on ovals.............why not? You could have factory supported Chevs, Fords, Toyotas, Nissans, Renaults, all sorts of new blood.
I like oval racing, I just detest the demolition derby mentality. These guys are good drivers, give them something to race, not play bumper cars.
My prediction on a one lug nut change? Wheels will start falling off until they figure it out.

This whole "single nut" wheel is going to take out one of the most unpredictable parts of NASCAR racing... 5 tight lug nuts. Anyone loose and you get a vibration and the holes on the wheel start to elongate. This then requires an additional pit stop.
So now, that whole element is being eliminated. I wonder if teams were tired of being penalized for missing lug nuts and going laps down to a vibration.
I think this make the races even less exciting than they are now... a single lug nut. UGH! Stop screwing with NASCAR. You already killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Stop trying to strip the dead carcass!

The single nut is necessary for the change to Aluminum wheels from the old steel wheel. One loose lug on the old steel wheel and it vibrated like all hell but didn't break off as a general rule, but on a Aluminum wheel, a loose lug nut will cause all sorts of disastrous issues. I don't believe for a moment that it will take just as long to change a tire as more torque is needed.
Paul, I like your proposed rules, but allowing teams to build their own chassis will make it next to impossible to police. That's one of the main reasons that they went with a single chassis maker. I'd also dump the cast iron block that they still use, go with the V6 Al block with overhead cams as you suggested. Where we differ is on the car bodies. I'd still go with Aluminum sheet so that they can be fixed, patched, or replaced as needed in house. Having to buy pre-made bodies would be very expensive for the smaller teams, and the multi car teams would need a totally separate building to house a good dozen or so shells. And how many do you try to transport to a race?

Eagle36, Just goes to prove how little I really know about today's Cup cars. I was under the impression that they're still sheet metal. Hard to tell when parts start flying after an accident. Joel
