While I was conversing with Patrick the other day about this kit, I mentioned I had one I had started. He convinced me to drag it back out and give it a go. I've actually tried to start this kit twice before. So this is the 3rd try at it. I first started it during the summer of 2008 and this is where it had gotten to before it got pushed aside by other projects. Then in Oct of 2010 our newest (at that time) kitten happened. Those that have a cat probably know where this is going. The box that had the chassis in it was in an exposed place and Taz was exploring. The resulting shunt was a write-off. Several suspension pick-up points were broken and some parts were swallowed up by the carpet monster. Then about two years later, I was able to score another kit at a very cheap price since the box had gotten water damaged. The box, instructions, and decals were no good, but all of the plastic was usable. So a restart was possible. When I first started this kit, I sprayed the chassis in Testor's Aluminum metalizer. But after doing research and seeing what other builders had used, I found out the chassis needs to be shiny(er). Others have used BMF or Alclad, but I tried Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf. I like the way it looks. Another thing I had gotten done back then was to get the body pieces painted Italian Red. But over the years, they have gotten several scuffs and nicks. So a respray is in the works. I had also worked on the top piece of the airbox. It had a couple of sink marks that needed attention. So I filled, primed, then painted.

I saw those same sink marks and since they seemed to be awfully similar, I left them... but now I think I will fill them in. Also, I went with bare metal silver on the tub and I think it looks okay.
I am glad you decided to join up! This looks like it is going to be a fun "group" build.
What was the rational behind the super shiny disc brakes? Just curious... I have Molotow available as well as BMF. I bought the Shapeways 3-D printed brake ducts. I am going to do the valve stems and seat belts (I may also buy Michael's Goodyear tire stencils) but I don't how much further I want to go with custom stuff.
Were you planning on leaving the front and rear wings with the kit chrome? Strip them and rechrome with paint? Or use Gloss Aluminum as was suggested to me when I redid my T4?
Great to have an exchange of ideas!

Great to have an exchange of ideas! Thanks Patrick The super shiny discs are just the kit chrome. Since I managed to get ahold of the Tamiya p/e set, I was thinking of using those parts for the stopping surface after I strip the chrome. I'll try scuffing the surface of the p/e to look closer to the real thing. I've also got some belts in 1/12th I've been collecting. For the wings, I've got two sets. So I can experiment with different ideas to get them looking realistic. I'm thinking of spraying one in dull coat to cut down on the shine. The real car had fairly shiny wings. From what I can tell in pictures, probably highly polished aluminum. So the kit chrome is a little severe. By the way, here is a link to the pictures I have been accumulating.. public.fotki.com/2whl/automotive-1/reference-1/ferrari-312t/ Back to present day, I unpacked the pieces/kit to restart. If you want, I can scan pics from the reference book. All the pictures in it were taken back in the day. Tamiya kit p/e I have four different sets of belts. I just need to decide which I want to use for this build.

You will be fine, I’m sure Patrick will be egging you on 😉 I would go with PE, I stripped the chrome off of mine then sprayed them with polished aluminum.. The wings are super shiny.. I am going to strip mine down and repaint the chrome, I found imperfections on the wings I don’t like and I have PE I have to install on the under side where everything attaches.

There is a school Of thought that gloss aluminum with clear will work on the wings. My rebuild of the T4 is that way. But that’s why this hobby is great!

This looks to be a fun build to watch Paul. That TS-30 looks like a good choice for a nice n' shiny silver color. Do I ever hear you about animals. We've always had dogs in the house and they have all left my stuff alone......all except.....this last one! It's like trying to keep up with a 2 year old baby. She's in to EVERYTHING!!! I have to keep my modeling room closed off or she'll get in there and start poking her fat nose into pretty much.....EVERYTHING.
Glad to see you pick this one back up and I'll be tuned in to more progress.

Thanks guys. Since the last time I put this build aside, I had made a couple of trips to my local Michael's. On one of those trips while I was roaming the aisles looking for stuff, I came across these eyelets. They looked like air intake trumpets, so I grabbed a couple of different sizes. After filing a notch in them, I mounted one up. The first test is to see if they will interfere with the bodywork. It looks good. The second test was to see if they interfered with each other. Again, it looks like it will work.

Nice find! If I ever get back to a Michael's, I'll look for some of those!

Nice! I miss Michael's. They closed and left here years ago.

Hope you guys don't mind, but I'll be following along as you 1/12 scalers come up with some great ideas, and your builds are pretty darn good to.
I had both a Michael's and a AC Moore. Moore went out of business. To bad as I could walk to that store. Michaels is only 10 min, but we're in the grip of a stay at home order. The only time I actually go out is to get food, prescriptions, or like today, fertilizer for the lawn.
