PROJECT Powerslide 2019 CITY Camaro William Byron Darlington 'Days of Thunder' Throwback Paint Scheme
I worked all day yesterday and the body is ready for window fitting, exhaust creation, and then to Tamiya white primer!

Body looks great, I’m keen to get one of the Cameron resin bodies. How are you planning on tackling the fade on the paint?

I've got a plan to tackle the fade with my air brush and we will see how it goes lol ... wish me luck!

I read a long time ago about rolling the tape into a tube and spraying across it...

The faded paint idea is why I decided NOT to build Ron Fellows "Bully Hill" car. I know I'd never pull it off!
I want to see how you do it.........

What they did was rolled masking tape it a tube like a cigar, put it on the angle of the stripe, so diagonally for you and then spray into it lightly and this helped with the lending of the two colours.

Thank you sir, that would be great I would love to see the technique.
I honestly chose this car over the #1 Kurt Busch car because I wanted the challenge of trying to create this fade as I have never attempted one before.
I actually completed Kurt's car - the resin body - and ran into an issue with the resin that made me shelf it completely, so then I was going to tackle it agian with a new shell from Mike - which I ordered - but then once it arrived I saw Byron's throwback scheme on the 2018 Camaro and decided to accept the challenge.
I honestly don't know if the method I have thought up will work or not - only time will tell - but I spoent quite a bit of time thinking it through in my head so I am lets say 'cautiously optimistic' But only time will tell. I think it would be confusing to try and explain it in words so I promise I will try to take photos on a set by step basis once I reach that point in the build.
These are crazy times we find ourselves in and I got excited when I was asked to work from home because of course you all know why! Modeling time! But I'm now fighting something that is not COVID-19 as i found out today it's a throat infection - very painful though so all modeling has kind of ground to a halt. AND I apologize if I haven't been present here much given my condition - but hopefully I'll get some work done over the next week or so.
Cheers and stay safe guys!
Adrian

Hope you feel better soon! We have snow in the forecast again for the mountains of Central California but with my trusty little space heater, all is toasty in model land... and yes, it is located far away from the paint booth which has a very good exhaust fan!

I had this car from the 'DAYS OF THUNDER' series by AMT but gave it and the other two cars to my son.
It looks like the green goes over the yellow on the front fender/door area and the yellow goes over the green on the rear fade... so it might be a three step process... paint the rear first (green), then the midsection (yellow) and then the front (green again). I can't remember if the colors were anything special in the movie such as day-glo or the like...
I will be watching this!

I'm assuming that the real 1:1 car was not painted, but "wrapped". So I tested out one of my graphics programs and I can duplicate that paint colour and fade effect on paper. Which means that if I could convince my printer to co-operate, I could print it as a decal. It would be one hell of a big decal to try to manage, but it's a thought?

The 1:1 car for Byron was most certainly a wrap but the original City Chevrolet for the movie (since it was made in 1990) is more likely a paint booth job. As for a decal, holy smokes... it would take multiple decals and overlaps and a ton of MicroSet and MicroSol wouldn't it? That's a real challenge there!

I could print a sheet that looks like this:
and you could cut out what you needed, but what a nightmare to install it indeed!
Yep, a gallon of microsol, lol.
I'm just musing over solutions here, I have no plans to try it!

Wow! that is one powerful decal!
Willie's car was certainly a wrap - which makes you appreciate the magicians that work in the body shops and basically paint works of art.
I first looked at Tamiya's Florescent Yellow and Green ... but they are see through colours and would be trickier to achieve the fade with I think, so I settled on the Tamiya Pearl Yellow and Light Green - and I will spray over the light green with Tamiya Clear Pearl to match up.
I'm honestly not sure guys that I may start with these colours and decide they are just not bright enough and end up layering on some florescent - this may be over top of the existing Yellow and Light Green - this may be a learn as I go for the final colours on this body - I just hope I don't screw it up!

I don't know if you saw what I posted but the "overspray" of colors goes front to back... the green on the front overlays the yellow midsection which overlays the green rear section... I would consider painting in reverse order... rear, then mid, then front... But then again, that's just my preference and opinion and we all know about those...
