I was going to be so clever, lol. I bought an AMT Impala SS kit, just to get the correct body shell. I was going to just drop it onto a Revell NASCAR chassis and hopefully have a nice model out of it. The AMT is a snap loc kit, but I didn't care, all I wanted was the shell and the glass. And the body is pretty good quality, so is the glass. Now here's the problem. It doesn't fit. It would, except the AMT is 1/25th scale, and the Revell/Monogram kits are......1/24th. You wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference, but it sure does. And my decals are 1/24th also.
Not a happy camper.

As you can see, the wheelbase is off by quite a bit

I never thought there’d be a big difference between the two scales until I saw a 1/24 and 1/25 3rd gen Camaro sitting together on a table just a few months ago. The difference in size was surprising!

Amazing isn't it? One scale inch doesn't seem like that much but it is!

Do you need an AMT NASCAR kit from that era? I'm sure I have more than one.

My real problem is will the decals fit, or do I have to shrink them and print them myself? I hope not, they're really good quality decals.

I decided the Monogram chassis under the AMT body wasn't practical, so I figured I give the box kit a shot. It's a bit of a joke, even for a snap-loc kit. This is the assembled chassis plus the so far unused parts:
As you can see, they omitted a few items, like half the roll cage, the front cross braces and most of the engine. The odd thing is the locating points for the cage frame, are molded in, they just didn't supply the bits. So I scratch built what wasn't there, and did some detail painting. It now looks more or less like a stock car. The underside wasn't too bad:
The roll cage complete, less the top part which goes on after the dashboard:
Why a stock car has a fan shroud I don't know, but its not glued in so I'll probably swap it out later.

So I have a finished chassis. I can drop the body on and call it a curbside for the moment. The hood can be made removable, so later I might cast 3/4's of an engine (if I ever get any more resin) and give it a proper engine compartment..
I hate that metal axle but maybe I can hide it later on, and why they keep making that double floor pan I don't know, but in the end you'll never see it.

Finished. I'm not happy with it, but good enough to go sit beside its buddy. I hate decals. Did I mention that before?
Now back to some proper 1/12th scale stuff.

Paul, I'd say from the pictures that the kit, even being a snap tite kit turned out pretty good.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your positive thoughts. I didn't mean to whine, I'm quite sure the master NASCAR builders here could make the kit into something special, I've managed to make it somewhat presentable, lol. It just annoys me when they could have easily included the missing bits and pieces, but I guess you (hopefully) get what you pay for. And I didn't even notice until after I posted these pics that the two raised ridges down the sides of the roof are supposed to be black...some touchup required, aarrgh.
Time to withdraw into my cave (and comfort zone) and build a couple of proper 1/12th kits.
cheers

Where'd the decals come from? I work at Canadian Tire and think I might have to do one of these one day.

If you can't find them, I can send you a jpg of them and you might print your own?
