Grassroots Motorsports forum is hosting another 2-week model car build, so this time I chose a street car, so things will (hopefully) go faster. This is Tamiya Mica Blue over gray primer. I was hoping for a darker blue, but the finish turned out so good I'm afraid to repaint it. It looks like a cross between the 10th Anniversary Sapphire Blue and Lotus Laser Blue. I've done all of the preliminary painting on the cockpit and chassis, so it's just a matter of detail painting and putting it all together. I'm thinking about lowering the suspension, since the built model sits too high. We'll see. Ben

It's close to my favorite colour of all time, I have a can of it waiting for the right car.
Nice job!
ps: for favorite colour, see my Gremlin, lol.

Thanks, guys! If I can figure out a simple way to lower it, I will. I'm afraid it would take longer to re-engineer the model's suspension than it takes me to change the shocks & springs out on my '04 (<3 hrs)! Ben

Well, I missed the deadline by a few days. I initially lowered it too much and ended up having to rebuild the suspension. If I had left it alone this would have been a very quick and easy build. Ben

I read that and saw your model at the end. What happened with that lacquer over enamel, that car was a mess. Talk about a lot of rework !

That turned out fantastic!! Almost looks like Testor's Icy Blue. Oh man.....you went through the dissimilar paint issues??!! I've been there and done that on one model before I learned that lesson. Looks like you pulled through this build great though.

Thanks for the kind words! I didn’t have any problems at all with the paint on this one. It’s Tamiya lacquer primer & paint with a Tamiya lacquer clear coat. It’s actually one of my better paint jobs! I initially was a little disappointed that the blue wasn’t darker but I got over that. I did have problems with the paint on my Tamiya 1st gen Miata. That was a Krylon base coat with Tamiya clear lacquer. Krylon is crappy paint and it reacted badly to the first mist coat of clear. I was able to salvage it by sanding and polishing it without a clear coat. Ben

Sorry Ben I didn't mean your paint job. I meant the one on the thread over at Grassroots Motorsport, there was one earlier in the thread on page 1, I think it was a 68 AMX. Yours came out very well, reminds me of a lot of them I saw at trackdays up at Loudon in NH. I do have to ask why you leave the sprue on while your painting it ? Is it so it makes it easier to handle, so you don't have to touch the body ?

The guy with the Chevelle used the wrong kind of stripper on it and destroyed the body. Oops!
I left the sprue attached to try to protect the windshield frame, because it’s pretty flimsy. I did the same thing with my Tamiya Miata. One of the side frames still broke when I clipped the sprue off. It does make a convenient place to hold the body, too.
