The original issue Tamiya kit. I got this far, realizing the box decal sheet was aged beyond salvation. Then I waited months for the TB decals I ordered, and re-ordered:
So I moved on, and finally I get the decals. The TB set is very clean, sharp, looks gold in some lighting and yellow in others. And a total pain to work with! OK, I hate decals, and I hate pinstripes, but talk about fragile? Even the least bit of just Micro Set and they break. But they look good when and if you succeed. Some I had to use Liquid Decal Film to get them to stick, but then the real problem. Tamiya TS13, yes, it dissolves them, so very light, just a wisp of a coat and wait days between coats, very much irritating. That Tamiya clear is too hot for my liking, I wish I could find the Testors lacquer. And the numbers are applied over the gold panels, and they won't stick to decals! I had to clear coat, apply the numbers, and clear again. GRRRRRRRRRR.
I'm going to let these cure for a month, I don't dare touch it! But that's OK, I have a bike on the go.
cheers Paul

Very nice start. I know what you mean about Tamiya clear being hot. It's frustrating setting up for a paint session and only being able to apply one mist coat.

Looks great! I would never be able to do that. Pinstripe decals! Yuck! I'd rather mask and paint them than trying a decal.
Thanks, Ismael "the decal hater"

Want two more of them? I’ll never build them... Um, yeah, OK.
What's almost as good as a red Ferrari? A black Lotus! I thought it was one of the prettiest cars ever built.
Thanks for the encouragement guys. This one looks like it may take a while.....

Well, I haven't stopped building, I just forgot to take pictures. These ones are what I got of this stage. Just your average DFV and Hewland. I did the block in light gunmetal, I think its a bit more accurate than the aluminum, plus it gives a nice contrast to the other bits. Up to this point, smooth sailing:

And here's where I'm at tonight. It's not Tamiya's fault, the kit's fine (except for being 40 yr old plastic and about a hundred c - clips!). But Chapman must have been drunk when he designed this wacky torsion bar suspension - not fun, it took hours. And I'm glad I ignored the instructions and built the exhaust last. I don't normally have a problem with the Cosworth headers, but on this one, if they fit the engine, they don't fit the suspension. I ended up heating and bending each pipe until I got what you see. Not perfect, but its staying. Besides, I CA'd the whole lot together . I think I'll bolt it on the car before I do any detailing, I'm not having a whole lot of confidence in this build at the moment. I still have to build the even crazier front suspension .
If you don't hear from me, I've probably shot myself

BWAH-HAH-Hah!
(You all know I’m kidding. Don’t you? I mean really... don’t you? Please say yo do... please?”

See what you've done??

Such an Iconic Race Car ... you are a very patient builder my friend ... impressive.
Your work on the engine as a whole is fabulous - clean and tight fit all around - isn't it fun working on engines
As to the decal disaster, well we have all been through it right, and even though you went through all that you managed to conceal the majority of it because they really do look quite nice. It's funny because I love decaling, it's honestly my favorite part of Race Car modeling, but when you are working with either very old decals or independently printed stuff it really is an art form to make them turn out anyway decent - and I totally agree that there is nothing more frustrating than the amount of time it takes to prep for a paint application and you get to do a mist ... and you're done.
As to the Tamiya being hot, I've never experienced it affecting decals for me - but then again I always hit my model with at least 2 lite coats of Future before I start Clear. I have had Tamiya Acrylic clear crack and separate on me - stratify etc. but never have I had it attack decals. I switched recently from acrylic to laquer CI don't know how many modelers here use Future but I swear by it - it can be unpredictable at times but I thin it with distilled Water and it almost always behaves beautifully for covering decals before the clear hit.
This looks great so far mate so keep up the good work and I will be following
