Well this is a project that I have wanted to do for a very long time, and it's just one of those things that I knew was going to be a huge job - lots of elbow grease etc. and so I guess it became a bucket list project - UNTIL - I started the Rick Mears project here in - and it jump started me to searching for a 1/18 scale Action Paul Tracy Lola Ford Cosworth Players Forsythe Racing - Not easy to find on ebay - but I actually found one locally by a stroke of luck.
Way back 15 years ago or so I stumbled across a guy in New Jersey named Gary Pino who started up his company called Chapparel Customs - he stripped down 1/18 Action indy cars among other things and did rebuilds. He was a really interesting guy and I had a lot of fun driving to NJ and staying overnight to pick up a Paul Tracy Big Gulp Indy 500 ride for my collection.
After seeing his KOOL Green conversions I knew I wanted to try it myself one day and here we are. I'm honestly going to invest more effort into this build than anything I have done to date. This is because I believe I can produce something special here that will be a one of a kind model and Hopefully out due Gary's versions. I'm not saying I can do that, but that is the goal on this project and I'm going to give it everything I have.
This Livery is one of if not my favourite Indy car livery of all time - and I want to do it justice and then some.
I have begun the process and it has been a crazy one to put it mildly - the paint stripping on a diecast is a labour intensive exhausting process - and it has to be done carefully so as not to damage the body in the process.
I scratch built the Lola Body add on aero bits from a Tamiya kit part - and I've used alot of filler to create the flows in the shape - I also scratch built the rear hump that was a signature of the Lola - none of which was easy - hours of some tedious work.
I have posted pics of my work so far as I just got a thick layer of primer on the top half of the body last night and will attack it again with sanding tonight to hopefully get close to what I'm looking for shape wise.
I will endeavour to post as often as I can stage by stage in case anyone here is considering a tear down/rebuild.
And lastly but MOST importantly in my opinion anyway, is that any builder that thinks a "rebuild' is an 'easy task' or 'not a real modelling project - I beg to differ, and I would challenge you to try and do a 'TRUE' rebuild and repaint - i.e. removing every single part of the finished model and stripping each piece bear - refinishing it and re-painting it - not to mention any scratch built molded pieces required - it's a different kind of challenge ... that's for sure
*Please ask questions if you have any*
