One of our former list members and a friend of mine, William "Bill" Brown passed away on June 12 after a very long battle with Cancer. While Bill's time with us was rather short, we were treated to his exceptional modeling abilities especially with highly detailed 1/25th scale Trans Am cars. I believe that his last build that he posted here was his Chevy Cruze Joel

So sad to hear that! I kept communication with him from time to time. He was working an Olds Aurora race car. He will be missed!

I am so sorry to hear that news. Bill seemed like a very good guy, when he found out I own a real Aurora he sent me updates and photos of his project, he even mailed me a magazine article about the Trans Am car. And then I didn't hear from him. Sad news, RIP buddy.
Thanks for letting us know, Joel.

Thanks guys. I'll pass along all the condolences to Marcy, his wife.
I was wondering what had happened to him as we always exchanged a email or two every few weeks, generally more. Only his Cancer treatments often kept him from emailing and modeling. Funny thing is that Bill was often more concerned about our approval of his builds so that any little issue he saw in a picture drove him to the point of having that picture deleted, then realizing just how good of a modeler he was.

This is very sad news Joel, my condolences go out to both you and to Bill's family members as they struggle I'm sure with this loss. I didn't know him unfortunately but he looked from your photo to be a very skilled builder indeed. May he rest in peace.
I hear so many modelers who are leaving us due to cancer, I just read that Colin Fraser lost a long battle with Cancer this year as well. I really hope we are not doing this to ourselves by exposing ourselves to the harmful things we do as we pursue our passion. I know for myself I have made the decision to take a break from the hobby once I complete my current 2 builds as I know the cough I have developed is certainly from the amount of time I spend exposed to the chemicals that we must use to create our models.
Such a struggle.

Adrian, I've thought about the same thing many times as I model for hours in my modeling room with the window always closed. I air brush always using my paint booth that's vented directly outside, and I always wear a respirator (which really needs some new filters). About half of my hand painting is with lacquers or Acrylic Lacquers, and the Thinners do get to me after a while as I'm literally inches from the point of painting. Air Brush cleaning is also a concern so I now wear my respirator for 75%% of the cleaning. But the glues all have toxic gases to some degree. Even the putties I use are lacquer based.
One thing I've started doing is limiting my modeling sessions to about 2 to 3 hours max. Paint sessions no matter how long or short are it for the day. But being retired I can model just about everyday, especially during the winter months.
I do remember when sniffing glue was a quick high for kids, so Testors, Revell, etc came out with glues that didn't contain lacquers or any chemicals that would give a kid (or us) a high. Of course those glues were next to useless as a bonding agent, but so be it.
I can't see myself wearing a respirator during a none air brush build session as it's not exactly comfortable, nor allows me to get as close as I need to be. Anyone got some ideas how we might better protect ourselves moving forward?

Anyone got some ideas how we might better protect ourselves moving forward? Joel Joel I am soo glad to hear you say it ... I truly am my friend, and koodos to you for saying it because I for one believe it's the 'Elephant in the Room' in this hobby. I can only speak for myself and my own practices, so if you have a set up where it's all good then you're very lucky, and read no further lol. My modeling room has no windows at all and no ventilation, and it's where I spend all my modeling time unless I'm doing a paint session which takes place in the living room near the sliding doors and I vent out the door with my little booth - now my booth has seen a tonne of painting and my filter needs replacing badly - but I've had the replacement filters ordered for 2 months now with no sign of them anywhere. I wear a Mask that covers my nose and mouth but it never fits quite right no matter what I try, so I am always smelling paint fumes as I paint - always. I can't find a new mask now anywhere to save my life - because of Covid. The filters in my mask haven't been changed in years to be honest, but I'm still not sure that would help much given that I still smell paint anyway. I started recently trying to wear the mask even when I am doing any gluing or hand painting during assembly because of the solvents and paints - Green Tamiya is the worst! But it makes things more difficult as you said Joel for sure. Anyway, it's a bit sad really because I have developed a nagging cough that won't go away. I know at this point its not likely anything permanent, but I can't ignore it any longer, so in the past week I made the decision that I have to put my health first - so I have to stop. I love it so much I really don't know how I'm going to do it, but I have to. At the very least take a very long break to clear out my lungs fully, and then if I do return it will be an off and on thing spread over time ... good luck with that Adrian lol.
Honestly it saddens me to think that I won't build all the models I have in my head to build, but at the end of the day I don't won't to get Cancer, that's the bottom line really, period.
I will finish my Mears and Tracy builds this week likely, and then I have to hang it up for awhile, for a long while, possibly for good. The only positive that is keeping my spirits up right now is that I got to do the 2 builds I'm doing now, and the way I think they may have turned out, hopefully, we will see what you guys all think. Joel I think that they just might be my 2 personal best builds to date, and if that is the case, then what better way to say goodbye?

Wow , this hit me like a Ton O' Bricks. Bill and I had an interesting relationship. He was suffering from depression brought on by his his long battle with Cancer, he would write me almost daily telling me that he was leaving because " The Guys on the Forum are only interested in Porsche"s and Ferrari's . I had the hardest time convincing him that wasnt the truth , we were all only interested in sharing our builds, methods and experience. Bill was beyond a Great modeler, his Chevy Cruise was a masterpiece, the skill he showed us during his build was more important than where the real race car came from. He was a stickler on Photos and would have me delete his pic's and posts on a regular basis because he didnt feel they were up to snuff. I reassured him on a daily basis and tried to make him understand how important he was to all of Us. Finally he asked me to delete all of his posts because, that was it and he was leaving, I did what he asked , although You will find many under the name "Deleted" We had so many discussions about Technique and How a certain result was achieved, I learned a lot from Bill about Model Building and Life, after my stroke in Dec. I missed those talks as I found him stimulating and despite his lack of confidence, always a True World Class modeler. My Condolences go out to his family and others who were a big part of his life. R.I.P. Bill Brown You are already Missed. Chris I would like to have anyone who knows how to contact Bill's Family to forward this thread, so they will know just how special Bill was to all of us.
