Well that tears it...
NBC has Danica Patrick as an “expert” analyst.
Her best finish at Indy? 3rd
Her average start in 8 attempts? 11.4
Her average finish? 11.5
Her last race at Indianapolis? Crashed and finished 30th.
Cause of the crash? Single car spin.
Number of race wins in any series, open or closed wheel? 1- in a rain shortened Indy Car race.
Boy, she’s an expert... at tearing up equipment and at blaming everybody else for her troubles! At least Kyle Busch has earned his “right to whine”. He’s a two time Cup champ!
Danica? That’s the best you could do? Come on, NBC.

I respectfully disagree. She knows more about racing than many others. She may not be the best driver or the best mannered for that matter, but she knows about it from experience. She won a race on fuel strategy. Like all other races in the world since the beginning of time. I was sitting in turn 3 at the 2005 Indy when she lead some laps. That's no small feat. So is a 3rd place finish.

She used to annoy the hell out of me on these broadcasts, but I think she did a fine job this year. No complaints from me.

She raced open wheel race cars competitively for 13 years. I would give her opinions on the subject more credence than those of any model geeks on internet forums.

I like Danica. She wasn't the best but she could hold her own with any of them on an oval. Considering all the crap she had to put up with I thought she did well. I always thought it was a mistake to go to NASCAR but you follow the money or you don't race. She's as valid a TV commentator as any of the rest, damn site better looking too!

And there it is... "damn site better looking, too!" Dario Franchetti was a much better driver and a champion and he lasted what, maybe a season, with NBC? And he isn't what one would call ugly... but who does he appeal to? And what demographic is Danica geared toward? There is such a misogynistic bent to auto racing. Women are the rare exception and this year there were NO women in the Indy 500! And how long has it been since a woman drove at Cup level in NASCAR? Janet Gutherie, one of the pioneers in motorsports, can't be voted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame because she only raced FIVE YEARS... only five and NASCAR requires 10. She is overlooked for her achievements. Jennifer Jo Cobb is another who isn't advancing but she's right there in trucks and has been for years. I'm not a fan of Danica as she tore up a lot of equipment and Stewart Haas gave her every chance in the world. She accepted no responsibility. And was never at fault... I don't hide it. I don't like her (and I met her personally where she only confirmed my opinion) and I probably never will. But that's what makes America great! Even second tier can become somebody with the right equipment.

C'mon Patrick, tell us how you really feel about her! Paul, If you know me, I seldom hold back! Except when discretion is advised. My occasion to meet her was the fatal Las Vegas weekend that took the life of Dan Wheldon. It was the first time that Las Vegas invited the drivers to take their cars for a spin on "the Strip". I was there on a work assignment and was staying next door at the Luxor. The staging area for the event was next door at Mandalay Bay. Done for the day with my job, I grabbed my camera and took off. All the haulers were parked in the lot and the cars were rolled out. I was there early enough that security was very light. A lot of the drivers were milling around in their street clothes and since I am a big motorsports guy, I knew them without their drivers suits. I started snapping away politely and since I had a pad of paper from my hotel room and a Sharpie, I also politely collected a few autographs. Crowds began to gather and security got tighter but I wasn't impeded and kept taking photos. The drivers had changed and were starting to mill about waiting for the meeting to discuss the rules of driving on The Strip. It was getting late in the afternoon and Danica as standing next to her car (which was nose out spaced about 6 feet from the next car) talking to her crew chief. I have been around the block a few times and know how to politely ask for an autograph. If I get turned down, I just walk away. So, I stood a good 10 feet away from Danica, her crew chief, and her car and waited until they were done. I asked, in a loud voice, if I could get an autograph and was greeted with a scowl and a snarled "don't stand so close to my car" when I wasn't anywhere near it! I know enough about racing to respect the facts that not only do they cost millions, but it is her office. She walked away with further acknowledgment and I felt like she was rude and the most unfriendly of all the drivers there! Hell, I got signatures and photos of Mario, Dario, Ryan Hunter-Ray, Arie Luyendyke (sp?), and a host of others. The ONLY one who refused was Danica... and I wasn't the only person she was rude to that evening. And I witnessed her behavior at AAA Autoclub Speedway in Fontana after she wrecked... herself. She blamed it on everyone else when she spun by herself! I have a lot of respect for drivers... and I have met a large number including Harvick, both Labontes, Rick Hendrick, DW, Scott Riggs, Mario Andretti, John Force, Connie Kaletta, and many others... and there were only two that were rude... Danica Patrick and Rusty Wallace. I even met a guy called one of the worst, Tony Stewart, and he was a funny guy! So yeah, I don't like her much as she treats her fans like crap... and that doesn't go well with me.

My wife had to chase, plot, and outsmart him to get an autograph at a race in Houston. He'd sign if you got next to him, but he didn't want to do it. I think people do change over the years, though. I used to dislike Montoya because he was the most egotistical prick I'd ever met when he was a rookie. But after a not perfect stint in F1 and a few years in NASCAR, I've noticed he's mellowed quite a bit. Mike

And what demographic is Danica geared toward? There is such a misogynistic bent to auto racing. Was Dario any good (I don't remember him working for NBC)? Did he like doing it? Lots of reasons why he might not be commentating. NBC does have Paul Tracy, a Champ Car champion (who also, in my book, won an Indy 500 - check the tapes), and Townsend Bell, another (present) racer. I assume most woman find Townsend attractive, at least. If you want more women in the cars, though, talk to the sponsors. As for the misogynistic bent, I think that applies to all sports, as not too long ago it was an amost all-male domain. The other sports also have have "pretty" female reporters. The ice level commentators (not "behind the glass") who work for all the hockey teams and in the studio. The roaming & vignette announcers for baseball teams. The football sideline reporters. I'll give NBC credit for giving a woman a chance at hockey color commentary, but I don't think she's very good (IMHO). But going back to racing, if you watch drag racing, you'll find quite a number of female and minority drivers. No problems in that niche. BTW, almost everyone on TV looks good. The networks don't want to put ugly people on camera. Mike PS: My wife also hates Danica, but not "because she is beautiful." :-) Nor was I a fan of her's. I always thought Kat Legge was a far better driver (and better looking). Danica just drove for the right people.

I always thought Kat Legge was a far better driver (and better looking). Danica just drove for the right people. Mike, The year after Dario broke his back, I seem to remember someone had him as a "color commentator" but the series have changed networks so often, I can't remember. At least NASCAR has women pit reporters on FOX and NBC. If I could fire one single person in all of race broadcasting, it would be that idiot Rick Allen that NBC has in it's Cup coverage. He has zero background in racing, misidentifies cars and drivers ALOT, and basically, to me, has an annoying call of "GREEN FLAG! Back in the air!" on every restart that just is as old as "BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY Let's go racing, boys!" I grew to loathe that week after week after week... but I also think the "signature bow" of Kyle Busch is cheesy... and you can tell they got some publicity hack to dream that up for him... along with the nickname "Rowdy". There is only one "Rowdy" in NASCAR and that was Rowdy Burnes from Days of Thunder who was a Dale Earnhardt based bad ass character. Danica had the right publicity people blowing in Mike Helton's ear and GoDaddy brought a lot of money to the table when they transferred over from open wheel. What I did not like about GoDaddy was the use of Danica as a sex symbol that kept guys slobbering over her unzipping her top as if they were going to see something by going to the website. But sex sells and that's a fact. IF she was so serious about being a race car driver, she should have told them to piss up a rope when it came to her image. But she played that card to the hilt... I think that was the larger selling point for her "success" in motor sports. Here's a comparison... Brittany, Courtney, and Ashley Force all can drive the shit out of some huge horsepower machines that are basically bombs being ignited with a human strapped to them. Yes, they are all attractive but they can drive those cars... and that is the difference to me... Angelle Sampey and Erica Enders are also terrific drivers. And I sure have a lot more respect for them than I ever did for Danica!

And my wife had kittens when I came home with Dario AND Mario photos and signatures. I had them framed and gave them to her for Christmas one year! I'll see if I have some photos. I have a pile of left overs from that some where!
