I checked, just for fun. A H&M SOHC goes for over $60,000.00 these days. IF you can find one.
Even if I had one, I couldn't afford to feed it!

Thanks, it's actually working out not too bad. I have a set of M&H's so I tried them on just for fun (they fit, surprisingly), I like the rake and the look, maybe I'll keep it this way:
Goodyear Rallyes on the front, all on Cragars. I think it's "era correct".

Paul, I can just close my eyes and conjure up images of your Merc pulling into Mikey D's on Saturday night, and drawing a crowd of Gear Heads for sure. Those were the days for sure. Now they're just good old memories for this old timer.

But it was an A&W drive in. Lawrence and Brimley, I think. The girls brought the food to your car on roller skates (try that today!). All the gear heads gathered there Saturday night before we went to 19th Ave to drag race. Except I was 16 years old and I drove a Sunbeam Alpine. I got laughed at a lot. But the funny thing was, every one of said gear heads who drove my Alpine all said the same thing- "this things fun!!!".
Those were the days.

Paul, enjoy your pre 70 years as life really changes in the blink of an eye.
I know what you mean about getting laughed at by the V8 guys. My little group all had either MGBs or MGAs which were looked down on. But we were into road racing not drag racing. Once I got called out to race, so I got to call the when and where. I picked the local down hill winding road that we raced on late at night. Not sure to this day what was in the 57 Belaire, but I never saw him after the 1st turn till the bottom of the hill. Got us a little respect, but not much.

Some glamour pics. I'll start with the hood off. 427 SOHC, it just barely fit between the shock towers, but it all lined up. There's really a cat motif on the cam covers. Really. I'll add a brake cylinder if I ever find one.
The underside. I figured if I'm running slicks I really should have some Gabriel Hyjackers and track bars. Stock exhaust, don't want to annoy the cops. Well, not too much.

So she's all done. Why is it when I start out to build a street car, I end up with a race car? All the chrome has been deleted (except the bumpers etc), no trim, badges. Electric door releases, just cleaned up. Vent windows removed . I tried to stick with anything that would have been available in 1970. I wanted to put a 4 Weber on a crossflow intake setup but the hood wouldn't clear and I didn't want a big bulge to ruin the lines, so I stuck with the 4 bbl. Champagne gold, light pearl overcoat. It would have made a nice ride back in the day.
Thanks for looking, and back to some serious work. Damn Matra is going to be more work than I thought, lol.
cheers
Paul

Paul, You really nailed it for sure. She's a real beauty. Back in the good old days, the drag guys use to use what they called Cheater Slicks on the rear and if they had some kind of exhaust to limit the engine exhaust nose, they'd drive their cars on the street over the weekend looking for some quick action/cash.
