I am going to have to improvise since I discovered the 4th exhaust on each side is about 1/4” short of the collector. I have a solution but I’m not telling until I’m done. How you others managed it, I don’t know but I can’t uncle what’s done without a mess! I also have a feeling one pipe stands up too high! I seem to remember Henry on the other build mentioning that he though the KA pipes were out of shape somewhat, possibly due to the rigours of transit. I'm not too convinced bouncing around in that box could bend them that much out of original shape, but he might be correct if you're having similar issues. I am happy to admit; I am dreading doing the exhausts. I think I will build both the KA and kit pipes and pick whichever works best. I know that part of the build isn't going to go to plan...

Wow, a 1/4" is a lot. Henryk did mention his were way off so first thing I did was check them against the styrene pieces. Mine were dead on to the kit parts except one that needed just a little bend. But I think next time I do this (I do have another kit!) I'll use the styrene pipes, metal collectors and stainless tips. In fact, I may do that on this kit.
Anyway, good news is I guess you got them painted?!

Martin,
I had read that on Henryk’s build, so I did a quick comparison and it didn’t seem the KA pipes were “out of shape”.
I’ve had fits with every single one of these interwoven pipes no matter the kit from thi one back to a Tamiya 1/12th Yamaha. And what’s odd is they are not standard especially at that time. They custom built the pipes to fit on the spot. And there is just no way to assemble them short of having a spare engine block for preparation.
I’m sure that it will be interesting to see your solution.

Sounds like every other build that's tried to use the KA exhausts, they just don't fit without some major fettling. You've got to think that they never actually built the kit using their set! I'll be interested to see how you solve this conundrum Patrick but I'll pass on using the set....

At least they are the same on both sides, so it won't look too weird... and if it does, I guess there is unglue. Photos will follow...

Might be better to pin them together. Use a piece of rod the same size as the original (or as close as possible) and then putty the joint, sand and finish. Should be nearly invisible. I use brass rod sometimes so I can bend and finesse the added piece to line up perfectly to its attachment point. Then glue the heck out of it, putty and finish. Very strong and no step to larger diameter sleeve.

Good idea, Brian, except the other three pipes are in place on each side and I can't remove the set-up to drill out the ends of the collectors, etc. Never even thought of that.

I'm also dreading this part of the build as there is no connection between the KA collectors to ensure alignment. I may have to build some form of jig. Although, as with everything else on this project, my 'solution' will probably involve me building a whole new exhaust system! 🙄

I think that looks great Patrick, bravo! If you had a carb hooked up I'd swear I'd be able to hear it running! Glad to see you went with more of the reddish coloring as I think these pipes were more of the 'earth' coloring then the harsh chrome/blue colors.
It may be the angle of the pics but that one pipe looks awful tall.

Now that I have got home and can see the engine pics at a bigger scale, I have to agree with Jim that the pipe colouring is awesome! Was considering doing a more constant blazing on my pipes, but now I've seen your results I'm thinking I should do something a little more gradual.

Jim, I couldn't agree more about that pipe but if I had straightened it, it would have become too long in some aspect and getting that particular curve could have been problematic. Also, when compared to the kit pipes, it didn't seem that out of whack. It is the second pipe installed so I would have to deconstruct the whole thing... not sure what I will do except maybe leave the rear clam shell in an "up" position for display. I will be curious as to how the other builds in this area appear.

This is why I usually build up the chassis at the same time as the engine, to be able to test fit body panels and suspension pieces for clearance. Instruction sheets are just a suggestion, IMO! Hope it works out OK for you!
