Pseudo clamps installed. Calling this done. Thankfully, the bar is still able to rotate fully, so might be useful further along the build.

Looks good Martin! I may adapt some of these ideas in the second GT40... what did you use for the bar itself? How did you fabricate the clamps?

Looks good Martin! I may adapt some of these ideas in the second GT40... what did you use for the bar itself? How did you fabricate the clamps? The bar is a piece of 0.063" piano wire. The clamp pieces are simply a piece of plastic tube sliced in half. I remember spending ages trying to find the right size, but I think I ended up using the ink tube of an old pen. The bar sat snuggly(?) inside the tube halves and I was able to simply glue the other halves in place to surround it. Had to use CA to glue the tube halves, which risked fixing the bar in place, but thankfully I was able to rotate it gently while it dried to prevent it sticking. I then added four short lengths of 1.2mm steel tube (with some scale nuts and bolts each end) to make the clamp pieces. It was lucky that the 'stem' the nuts and bolts were molded on fitted nicely inside the tube, so made that task a whole lot easier!

Very nice work, Martin! That kit anti-roll bar is the first thing that has to go! Are you going to make a Ken Miles? I'm very tempted to try doing him in his duffle coat. Afraid it appeals to my stupid sense of humour! Johnny

Afraid it appeals to my stupid sense of humour! Johnny Cheers. Yeah, it looks very cartoonish. I would expect a more expensive kit (the Meng, perhaps... ) to supply that part as a more scale-like formed piece of wire. Yes, very much looking at making a Ken Miles character. Thankfully, I have plenty of time to work out how I'm going to achieve it to...

And I have a seated driver with an open face helmet that may make a nice Ken Miles figure driving... I just have to decide how to either A) release the seat belts from their position or B) put another belt in the empty seat thus giving the passenger seat a belt which is technically incorrect...

That's a tough one. I'd be reluctant to undo any work done to those seats though.

Thought I'd best do an update before I get too much further. Managed to finally get enough courage to install the exhausts. Used the kit (plastic) ones in the end as I wasn't convinced I would get a good enough surface finish with the metal KA ones without a lot of effort. Added some weld-lines using tiny amounts of CA glue and a toothpick. Pretty pleased with the result of that. Modified the two pipes with the clamps (L6 and L7) by removing the moulding of said clamps, making two small thin sleeves and installing the PE parts from the KA kit. Will add some bolts/nuts next. Found that my DIY cross-bar did in fact slightly impede the locations of the pipes, but thankfully not enough to make any real difference. Very lucky! Used the supplied collectors purely to ensure exhausts sat correctly while they dried. Will be installing my brass DIY versions next. Will attach those to the exhaust ends before connecting to pipes. Before: After:

The weld marks look very authentic.

The weld marks look very authentic. Thanks. I used a tiny amount of Tamiya weathering (yellow) brushed into it. I think it does just enough to emphasise.

Looking really good Martin!
I've read a couple of kit reviews suggesting that the Trumpeter exhaust headers are too thick...they are actually spot on, according to my callipers!
What colour are you using for the chassis blue? Can't make my mind up what to go for!

Thanks. Yeah, I thought they looked far too thick while on the sprue (similar to the issue with the oversized anti-roll bar) but I did measure them and they did match a standard imperial tube diameter, which makes sense. Cannot remember what it was, but they look fine installed. My initial thinking was for something along the lines of 'Tyrrell Blue' for the chassis, as I didn't want it a 'bright' blue (like the Tamiya X4 Blue on my engine block) because I wanted everything else to stand out, and I thought anything too bright would just look unnatural. So far I've decided on a colour called 'Blue Angels Blue' by Australian company SMS. You probably cannot see it too well, but the rail at the back of my gearbox in the last set of pics is that colour - you might see the contrast to the cross member or block which I did in X4. This blue is a little darker and dull compared to the X4. I was going to repaint the cross member in the Blue Angels Blue, but I'd already glued the bolts/nuts on and didn't want to risk ruining it! www.scalemodeller.com.au/products/premium-blue-angels-blue-fs15050-30mlI do possess a jar of Zero Paints Tyrrell Blue for my P34 (when I get to that...), so if all else fails I will use that for this chassis.

Great stuff, Martin! I had a feeling you weren't just sitting around doing nothing!
I didn't think that the pipes in the KA upgrade were too bad. I have seen some complaints that they were bent in shipping but mine seems to have survived. I would use them again although the supplied kit collectors have a brace that puts them in the exactly correct position, something missing on the KA collectors. I think it really affects the fit.
Martin, if you could check your messages please, I have a note in there about the KA pipes. Even if you are in AU, I'm interested. It will be a while before I take on that second kit.
Also, I used Tamiya pearl blue for my chassis color. Don't know why but it looks okay.
Looks great as usual!
