The weekend is finally here and I got all my chores done, even cleaned the 1/1 scale car! So just a little bit of modeling time today, tomorrow should be more.
Since I plan on using the kit decals this was the perfect time to try them since I want to clear coat before starting the suspension, brakes and mounting the power plant. Today was the first time I took them out and even though they were individually sealed and covered with tissue paper mine were pretty scuffed up, and the black numbers a bit blotchy. Hopefully the clear will take care of that otherwise it's off to Indycals. Otherwise they are very nice, thin and behave very well. So far no tendency to tear and they lay down nice and flat. I like doing decals, one of my favorite parts, but adding each letter of FORD separately wasn't fun...at least I spelled it right and got it right side up! So, ready to start adding bits and pieces to the chassis.

I'm not sure I would do decals just yet as I have to handle the car way too much during the entire process but to each his own! I did do the blue on the sides of the lower tub. It's holding up well since it is MCW colors!

Things slow down, Jim? No new posts since back in February! Still here Patrick! The GT mechanics took a break from the car to get a long overdue spray booth set up, now I can paint in odorless bliss!

And work has progressed a bit on the GT40. First up was opening the calipers, just to waste time!
Then it was time to start working on the front suspension. Painted the springs chassis blue first, didn't like it. Painted the red and that wasn't any good either. Finally settled on a lighter blue to go with the rings on the tires. The kit parts are clunky and simplified but they will do, added some bolts to dress them up a bit.
Shortened the shocks and checked the ride height, looks ok at this time.
The tire transfers were a real bear for the fronts and needed a lot of heat, the rears went on fine with just a burnishing, go figure. Still a bit wet and need some clear to protect them.
Not much of the calipers and discs can be seen with the tire on, no surprise. Will add some brake lines next.
Engine mounted and where she stands now
Been going over options for the drive shafts, if I use the "rubber boots" the kit supplies they will be way too long (even cut down), so I went with a circle cut out of Evergreen and added some bolts. Tucked way in at the transaxle they should look ok
And that's as far as I've gotten.

Jim,
Did you paint your wheels? I did mine and they look a ton better. Used Tamiya Gold TS.
Also, are you using aftermarket tires or the box stock?
Looks good, my friend!

I didn't paint the wheels Patrick, just gave them a dark brown wash. The color was matching up to my other gold wheel paints so I left them.
Tires are from the kit, not very good in terms of material but will definitely hold the weight.

Jim, Progress is progress no matter how much or how little one makes. The chassis pan, engine, and tires painted/decaled looks excellent.

Joel, I'm happy with the progress so far...even more happy that I didn't start something new already.
Thanks for the compliment and for stopping by!

Squeezed some more time in this weekend and worked on the rear suspension. The shock bodies are held on with a metal pin which is a very tight friction fit. In fact, quite a few pieces are fitting together snug enough that I'm not having to use adhesive. A couple of decent sized parts from the KA set are used here, I'm leaving most of the PE parts in their natural state and not painting them.
I had to omit the PE brake discs as I couldn't get the caliper to fit properly with them installed, no loss as they really don't add much.
As per the KA instructions, I need to remove some of the upper frame in order to dry fit and check ride height. Once that looks good I'll add a bit more detail in the form of bolts and brake lines, just to make it a bit more busy looking.
Happy to have a rolling chassis, always makes me feel like I accomplished something!

Looks great, Jim! I didn't get quite as far as you this weekend as I only got the front fitted and the linkage cut down. Now that the fronts will work, I will take them back off, do the appropriate brake line mods and then move to the rears. I am really rethinking whether I want to do the two pipes that lead from the engine into the bulkhead. Need to see if they are really necessary.
Moving along is a nice thing. I need to do the tires next as well... but my attitude about decaling is a little different from yours in that I usually save that for last as I am want to make messes... LOL!
