I have an Aurora Battle Aces Ferrari 250 that I have a question about. It only has TWO nostrils between the headlight, not three (as in our banner pi, center is closed) and I can find no pictures of a 1:1 car with two. I would be happy to cut an additional nostril between the two, but they are too close together. A lot of pics look like two but the center is commonly closed off to allow for striping and numbers to look complete, especially on restored cars. Anyone know for sure if there were ever two rather than three? TIA for any help. If I can't find a two-nostril car to do, I think I'll just close them off and scribe three closed ones in their place.

Hi Brian. I just looked at my recently arrived Fujimi 250 GTO kit. Three evenly spaced nostrils, as you would expect. Closing the center one would look like the car in the banner pic. I know, that doesn't help at all.

Thanks, I've looked at hundreds of pics on the net and haven't found a two-holer yet. I'm starting to think Aurora just screwed up! Funny, the Aurora Thunderjet HO slot car body has three! Fill and scribe looks to be in my future!

I have never seen a picture of a "two-holer". There are lots of variations in the 1st generation GTOs, with the shape of the intakes either side of the main intake, the number of side vents, the location of the running lights outside of the headlights, etc., but no "two holers". The Aurora kit is not the most accurate in many respects, although I do have fond memories of it.

An example of an early prototype mentioned above.

...no "two holers". The Aurora kit is not the most accurate in many respects, although I do have fond memories of it. I think this sums it up! The chassis/engine detail is decent considering the age but the body shape is kind of screwy, especially the nose shape and roof profile. I think the Aurora may hit the auction block. I have a Testors/Italeri that may get the treatment instead. Thanks for all the help! Brian

Didn't want to put you off the project Brian but I agree the Aurora kit is not a good starting point for a serious GTO replica.

I appreciate that, JC, but I'd much rather find out about ANY kits shortcomings before investing too much time in it!

in the book "Ferrari 250 GTO" photos only show 6 series 1 & 2 GTO's with 3 vents on front fenders . chassis 3589gt , 3647gt , 3729gt , 3769gt , 3909gt and 3987gt all of which had them added after they left the factory . it does appear all GTO 64's had three vents .

Its possible there is a plug in the middle nostril. I've seen pics of cars with plugs in all 3 nostrils. Mike

Good Morning Fellows, I also did an exhaustive search and a "Two Holer" doesn't show, some inconclusive photos. The thing about GTO's (there were only 38 made?)is that they all vary slightly and were also modified throughout their careers. I know the Aurora is inaccurate BUT I like it and it will be a Mecom car and it begs for SOME modification. Interestingly, is the Strombecker based on the David Piper GTO that had the roof lowered and other body modifications (later restored)? The "Prototipi" would be an interesting kit bash with the earlier 250 rear and roof. Also I believe Team Mecom had Two GTO's: a different one at the 62 and 63 Sebring for Roger Penske (a SUPERB driver by the way), a two slot and later, a three slot. Same car?, I don't think so, it seems the front fenders are less arched on the 63). I believe the Burago 250 LM headlight would work great on the Aurora. Thanx, for listening, John.
