Good Morning Guys, Found out yesterday how to Rotate photos in Photobucket. First to be fixed were my King Cobras that were developed and loaded Upside down! These are the first three cars I found on CDs from my water damaged collection the others will have to be loaded onto CDs from the good prints I found. I am attaching a sample of my King Cobra photos. The number 94 and 96 cars were shot at Naval Air Station North Island in 2011 and 2012 and the 98 car also there within a few years. All three are a little different, with a "Bundle of Snakes" and the McKee transaxle on the 94 and 96 and "Birdshooter" exhausts and a BMC Huffaker transaxle on the 98. The 94 and 96 MAY be the same car just renumbered. I have scratch built both transaxles and would like to resin cast some if there is any interest. A very rare but very good clear plastic interior for a "Two Seat Sports Car" was made by Pactra for slot cars but is for the King Cobra except it has a center shifter. Had to delete the bad photos from PB which is a chore also. Thanx for viewing, John

Hi John, Thanks for posting these I recently received a Teapot Models Cooper T-49 Monaco or King Cobra kit from a friend. Its unusual in that it is a two part clam shell body , a top and a bottom and is a Vac-u-formed Styrene! It has good detail and enough internals to make a decent model. I haven't decided what or when I might do with it but it is very rare as the maker recently passed away and the number of kits he made was very small. Chris

The US road racing royalty of the early to mid '60s all raced in the Cooper King Cobra. A good kit of that car has been needed for a long time. I talked to Paul Fisher about that but he said Shelby was the road block.

They seem to have problems retaining their transmission oil.

In an article in a mid '60s Road & Track titled "Charlies Carlumn" a reader writes (paraphrased): " I noticed a big barrel of Castor Oil in my mechanics garage, why does the garage need so much Castor Oil?" Charlie replies: "For Locked Rear Ends." Ha Ha

Very cool, oddly I have never seen this racing car or I might have a long time ago in one of my dad's Road & Track magazines and just not know what I was looking at. I was going to ask if a kit of such a car exists, Chris answered and presented photos, fascinating! As interesting as this car is, why didn't AMT or Ertl or even Monogram produce a kit of the King Cobra? If the Howmet TX Mk II can get a kit, so too should the King Cobra!

Most likely Mr Shelby wouldnt let the kit be made, he didnt actually make the base Cooper Monaco , it was more of a Kit Car! The logic of the day was Throw a Big Block in It and Win!. well not always the final result but some interesting by-products. At the time of this car a lot of model kits in the sports car class were done as Slot Car bodies, like the AMT Can Am series. I did start some research on it, and a interesting fact was , It is a Stress Skinned Space Frame, such was the trend. Basically the pre-monocoque ( spell check cant figure that one out LOL! ) chassis. They would take a standard Space Frame, a tube type and then put Aluminum sheet between the tubes in the larger areas, thus reducing the torsional flex and adding overall rigidity. Then some wise guys eliminated the tubing..can you say Jim Hall and made a Tub type chassis... the rest is history. Chris

Chris: Like you, I am a huge fan of the King Cobras. My question is: “Why would Shelby have allowed it to be kitted in 1/32 by Monogram?” Also, I’m guessing he could block the use of his brand, but as you pointed out, it’s not his chassis. Maybe something to do with slot car scales? I am convinced that a 1/24 resin kit would sell like hot cakes…the car is shapely, it has a storied history, and there are dozens of liveries…but maybe it’s just me… Tim

I was friends with a Japanese collector who had access to those GREAT Japanese hobby shops and slot car tracks. I acquired kits and slots, magazines and photos I took over here and swapped them for rare Japanese items. He made a nice KC on an IMC Ford GT chassis, and gave me a very nice RESIN King Cobra. He said there were differences in all the slot car bodies and the resin had some errors in it too. I sold it on EBay with the slot bodies, wish I hadn't. I DID get the Pactra and Lancer bodies back on EBay, they are in a automotive museum now (I need to try and get them back) when I left town. The Pactra's were pre-painted in two very nice metallic blues. There is a 1/24 scale Shark and I believe a Stormer slot body out there I'd like to get. The later excellent Lancer Jerry Titus King Cobra doesn't count in my book as a "Real" King Cobra nor the Pete Brock DeThomaso which I have and do like. Anyone with photos of the Stormer or the Shark, one had the "Wrap Over" rear brake air scoop that was correct. Thanx, John
