Hello, Couldn't help it when I found a 1/700 scale CH-46 helicopter model. That will help with my display space problem because the CH-46 is a rather big chopper. It even has decals Thanks, Ismael

Ismael, Only you could find a 1/700 scale CH-46 with opening rear ramp and decals. Can't wait to see it finished.

The rear ramp and the door is scratchbuilt. I have since added the steps to the front "door"

It looks great considering the size, why do they not have rotors? Too small or to make it appear they are spinning??? Looking at the tree I see them there , My mistake, are you putting them on? Chris

Yes! The paint is drying on the 2 rotors. I'll work decals next. Putting the rotors will be the last step.

Hello, It is FINISHED! This is not a serious model. Just a fun project. Added rear ramp and forward door with steps. Drybrushed exhaust soot. Of course everything hand painted thru a magnifier. Hope you like it. Thanks, Ismael

I like it! One of these days I’d like to find a 1/144 CH-46. There I was story: Back in the 80s, I worked out of Kinston, NC, which was a small airport with a control tower about halfway between Seymour Johnson AFB and MCAS Cherry Point, which was awesome because we’d get jets from both bases shooting approaches there all the time. Phantoms galore! I had a student up on his first solo, and just as he turned base, two dark gray and orange CH-46s flew right through the traffic pattern at 500 ft, going the same direction as the student, and went right under him! Tower was yelling at the choppers on the radio and I was having a heart attack on the ground. My student never saw them! He was too focused on the runway. I got a call from the squadron commander later that day. Ben

How come he never saw them? I mean, the CH46 is not small by any account. What did the squadron commander say?

Ismael, Incredible job. The painting and decaling looks great considering the super small scale, I can barely see it. Just think of the number of helicopters you can build with full unfolded rotors on a single 4ft shelf.
Ben, Great story, and like Ismael said, how come the student pilot never saw either of them? Besides, from the few I've seen over my house, they make quite a lot of noise that could wake the dead. Can't you hear two of them in a small single engine plan? I'd also love to know what the Commander said, and if the two pilots at least got chewed out.

The guy I talked to apologized. I was 24-ish at the time and was more than a little intimidated. I was probably standing at attention while I was on the phone! The FAA probably got involved since they violated controlled airspace. The choppers were there and gone in a few seconds and student was so focused on setting up his landing, that’s all he was thinking about. A new student could be so overwhelmed and focused on just keeping the wings level that he/she would miss other important things. As they grew more skilled, their “view” would expand and they’d pick up on more of what’s going on around them. I saw that again to a lesser extent when I was teaching my daughters how to drive. Another time I had a close encounter with a couple of F-4s where I could actually hear them go by, but the student was too busy trying to maintain the correct distance from the water tower we were circling that he missed them. That flight instructing and later charter job really taught me a lot about how people learn and react to new situations, not to mention what one should or should not do in an airplane. I could probably write a book about all of the crazy/funny/stupid/scary stuff that went on there. It’s a wonder I survived with life and license intact! Sorry for the thread jacking and thanks for listening to me ramble. Now, back to cars! Ben
