Awhile back I built this SCCA Mercedes 1/32 300sl roadster and posted here, I also entered it in the NNL West Virtual Show. I got a email yesterday requesting additional ( larger) photos of it so they can include it in the Fine Scale Modeler Special Magazine issue on this huge show. It is always an honor but considering the Thousands of entries, the quality of those models and the Prestige. I am really Thrilled. Thanks to all for your support on my W.I.P and I cant wait to see it in this Globally available Publication.. Chris

This is one of the first pics I took for the magazine, the pics have to be 1mb to 2mb in size so I had to switch from my 19mb Motorola phone to my Canon Rebel DSL camera. its getting the job done but if I edit the pics at all they drop way down to this size 784kb. so no good... I will keep working on it. a lot are coming out dark so I am going to try outside, maybe tomorrow morning if the temp is below 100 degrees at 6am!

Congrats Chris. I got a model selected for their Contest Models, too, as a result of the Virtual NNL West. Like you I had to submit larger images. In addition they asked if I had any that were on a white or light grey background instead of the black background TRJ-style picture I had submitted. I was surprised, too, that their photo spec preferred RAW or TIF formats rather than the far more common JPG format. Fortunately I shoot all my models in RAW so I was able to accommodate them.

I dont understand, all mine are Jpeg, but Tim said they could use them if the sizing was large enough. I am not that big on this stuff.. Chris

I read the manual and being the first Canon Rebel, it doesnt have a RAW setting until you go into a full manual mode and I will try it and see..

Chris, I also shoot only in RAW, edit in a photo program, and then convert to JPEG or Tif as needed. I rather that the issue is resolution size, as JPEGs that are to small become a problem for them to publish as the quality becomes an issue. What is the resolution of your JPEGs?

The RAW format leaves the both the pixel data and the color data for each pixel uncompressed. By contrast, the JPEG standard always compresses the data, importantly both color and pixels. Modern compression techniques however, mean that JPEG image quality can be excellent. High quality JPEG photographs are commonly available in even relatively inexpensive cameras these days. With the advent of cheap digital cameras at very high resolution (12 megapixels of better), digital cameras that can shoot and store RAW images are extremely hard to find. In fact I don't think anyone offers them in an inexpensive compact format anymore, and increasingly people use their cell phones to shoot their photos. Most desktop and laptop computers, and even cell phones, come with very capable JPEG editing software. With RAW, as Joel mentions, you need specialist software to edit an image (I use Photoshop). That's why I was surprised that on Kalmbach's digital upload guidelines that FSM editor Tim Kidwell linked in his original email to me (https://www.kalmbach.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/submissions.pdf ) they lead off with "Subjects should be photographed using the RAW setting, if available, on your digital camera. The next-best capture setting is the highest-quality JPEG or TIFF." I would have thought that RAW is fast disappearing among all but the most professional photographers these days.
