Once again I tried and once again I ended up shutting off the tv as NBC's coverage of the Indy Car race from Mid Ohio is just unwatchable. Just how many commercials can you possibly squeeze into every split screen that's so small you can't tell one car from another. The final straw was after numerous commercials on a split screen, they did a Nascar ad for their race on NBC while showing a aerial view and then they told us just how great the overall view of the action is. It looked like Ants running around a dirt track. Then finally what I thought was a few min of the race on full screen turned into another junk piece about Herta's drum playing in a band when not racing. Had enough and turned off this crap excuse for a broadcasted auto race.
That's it for the year with Indy Car/NBC and most likely next year if some how they manage to sign with them.
And if they think that this will make me sign up for their streaming with or without commercials, there's just no way. My cable bill is already a few bucks under $200, which is way more then I care to spend.
So it's back to You Tube to catch the condensed version later this week with no commercials. Can't wait to see the difference when they switch to the Nascar race right after the race. Strange how the F1 contract with ESPN is commercial free.

Their coverage of the last IMSA race I watched was complete crap, too. I’ll wait for the YouTube versions a couple of weeks after the races. They usually have the outstanding IMSA Radio guys calling the race and no commercials. I guess that’s what the folks overseas get to see live.

Ben, I watch more and more of the IMSA, and world wide GT racing on You Tube with no commercials. Most are the full race. Doesn't really bother me that I have to wait a week or two, I just don't read Racer Magazine online or other racing sites.
BTW, I've caught a few DTM races, and these guys put the GT3s to shame. They're like GT3 cars on a major dose of Steroids.

I have no problems with NBC's Indy Car coverage. Instead of split screen, would you rather have only the ads?
My gripe with evry network that covers any kind of sports car racing where there are drivers changes is I cannot memorize all the drivers in all the cars. Please always have the car make logo up on the leader board. I can track them that way. Japanese Super GT does this (watch on Youtube) and they don't even change drivers.
In DTM this year, they are all GT3 cars. No steroids involved.
Now, don't get me started on the F1 coverage ESPN buys from SkyTV. That is the single worst group of announcers in autoracing. Too many of them. The lead announcer always screaming. Constantly trying to drum up excitement when there is none...

Mike, The split screen is so small you can't tell one car from another to start with.
As far as the F1 coverage on ESPN goes, those announcers are from Sky TV as you said. I don't mind how they announce the race as I get to see the whole race. True, F1 isn't as exciting as Indy Car racing, but that's the nature of how F1 is constructed. I'm curious to see if the Nascar race has the same poor coverage on NBC today, which I'm recording for viewing tonight.
The DTM races I've seen on You Tube that I was referring to were from previous years. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused by my comment.

The F1 coverage we get is free on TSN. Other than the announcers all to obvious pro-English bias it's really excellent. All the races are shown live.
We rarely get any sports car races worth watching, so its Daytona, Sebring and LeMans, and highlights of the rest if we're lucky. Just not enough viewing interest.
Other than the Indy 500, I wouldn't watch an Indycar race if you paid me. I do watch NASCAR sometimes, but it's for comic relief.

I feel like its always been this way and it really hasn't changed in the past 10 years since they introduced sibe-by-side. I'd rather have it than not though, they gotta pay the bills somehow and I'm sure they dont have the sorta budget F1 can throw at TV.

Right after the Indy Car broadcast (if you can call it one) on NBC, was the Nascar Cup race from Road America. I recorded it to watch after the BQ. Well the race was excellent, and the coverage the exact opposite of the Indy Car crap. No side by side commercials every 5 min or so that's really 2/3 of the screen, no commercials unless there was a break in the action and then only a few commercials.
Now that's what Mr. Penske Indy Car group needs to negotiate with NBC. True, Nascar has a lot more muscle with the networks, but Penske didn't buy Indy Car so they could keep the status quo.
I've always gone by the theory that if I'm having a problem or issue, then so are others, and the internet is a way for all to express our displeasure if so needed.

I’m right there with you. What’s the point of tuning in if all I’m going to see are commercials for over half of the race? I guess they’re trying to drive people to their subscription version. I’d probably do it if they had commentary by the IMSA Radio crew like Fox Sports did. They’re excellent and very knowledgeable about the racing. The NBC crew doesn’t seem to know squat half the time.

Ben, You do bring up a very interesting point of subscription services. Personally, that should be left for people who want to control what cameras and angles, no commercials, etc. My wife and I are old school being in our 70s. We grew up with Analog tv with that great invention that every house had back in the 50's and 60's: the TV/radio antenna.
TV was free, all we had to do was buy the TVs and hook them up. The commercials paid for everything, and we generally bought a lot of those products. Cable when it 1st came out, pushed the concept of no commercials for $9.99/month. Then slowly the price went up, and here came the onslaught of commercials that just continue to grow and grow.
Now with the internet comes Streaming. Our cable/internet/land line bill and we're already at $200/month, Throw in our cell phones and we're at the $260 mark. Way to much for way to little. No way folks our age need or want to stream on top of our regular monthly bills. Remember we're retired and live on a fixed income.
BTW, I've watched a few vids on You Tube today with a summary for 10-20 min of the Indy Car race, and without commercials was easier to follow the flow of the race, then what I was watching on Sunday thanks to NBC.

I'm total with you on this Joel! My cable/internet/ phone bill is the same as yours. Add the cell phone and it's Darn close. We've been taken hostage. Damed if you do and Damed if you don't. They want you to do everything on the internet. Pay bills...Banking...etc. They want us to go paperless...not a chance from us!
Now for the NBC bull crap. I can not stand NBC. Some how they've maneuvered their way into ALL the sports that cool to watch. The commercials are horrible. The bull crap side/side is the worst idea in TV. When they go to side/side...I hit the Mute button.I understand the bill paying horse crap but...two to three mins of the race and then 5-6 min of commercials is not good! As far as Nascar is concerned...they can keep it. F1 is out the door too.

I was watching David Land's weekly racing blog, and he mentioned that NBC told Indy Car that no matter how long the race would exceed it's slot due to yellow or red flags, come the Nascar race, they're going to have to cut away. So Indy Car shortened the race from 90 laps to 80 laps just to be on the safe side. But when the French open ran long, and I mean long, they stuck with it, and NBC didn't cut to the race till 40 laps had passed. True that the race was moved to CBS Sports, but I missed that announcement as I'm sure a lot of others did to.

Tony George saw to that 25 years ago. Also, NBC has no pull with the French open. Plus they paid a pretty penny, I'm sure, for the covergae rights. One thing I said when the NBC Sports network was set up is that it is new and has to take the leavings of the other networks. Two of those leavings were Indy Car and the NHL. (My 2 favorite sports, BTW. Guess that shows what kind of low life I am.) I said once they got going, they would be marginalized or dumped. Well, hockey is leaving for ESPN (because they are in dire need of programming for all their channels) and NASCAR trumps Indy Car. Mike
