Well, jumping back into things with this Project. I had so much fun doing the PT KOOL Green car that I decided Greenlight has finally got a fairly decent Cast/Mold on their 2021 1/18 NTT line, so I am going to create Helio's Indy 500 Winner. The Way he just knew the perfect line to take through turn 3 was pretty impressive to watch, as it was the run out of the turn that gave him the win - incredible driving! So I picked up a Herta Car because it was literally $45 bucks and I am going to do a complete tear down and strip of every single piece of the diecast and repaint and refinish to the Helio Winner. There will of course be lots of additional Parts and photo etch goodies etc. - as many as I can find and manage to recreate. One of the advantages to doing a 2021 Car is that there are plenty of great clear photographs for reference - so I'm going to be able to hopefully get very realistic reproductions of the cockpit and entire car really. I will post progress pics as often as I can - it's not my strength though lol It's been over a year since I have picked up an exacto knife

Good Project, I will be interested in your add-on's and scratcbuilt parts. I learn so much by just watching the progress on these types of items, Thank's Adrian...

Adrian, I'll be following your build every posted step of the way. This one's going to be very special as he should have won #4 in a Penske ride, but it just didn't turn out that way.

I'm getting excited again to be creating as realistic a reproduction I can acquire in 1/18 scale - and there will be lots of scratch built parts for sure.

I really have not personally come across a truly detailed high end build of a modern Indy car - since the end of the Lolas anyway, and I think a lot of builders just don't find this generation of Indy car very sexy, and I can certainly understand that - but once I actually got the model in hand and started studying my close up reference photos, I realized that it's a beautiful machine in it's way - so I am just going to try and do it justice - with fit, finish, and detail - as realistic as I possibly can

Adrian, I'm a big Helio fan from day 1 when he joined Team Penske. My favorites run the gamete since the day that I met both Mr. Penske and Mark Donahue at Bridgehampton for the 1967 USRRC. They were running a Lola T70 and the rag tag team I was helping out was running a very old 322ci Geni Ford. We were pitted right next to them. Donahue was truly an amazing driver and my all time Penske favorite who to this day is the cream of the field. He won races and titles in USRRC, Can Am, Trans Am, raced in Nascar, and even F1 (which took his life). Then there's Mears, Fittipaldi, Bad Boy Tracy, Hollywood Spin & Win Sullivan, and finally Castroneves.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of any of the various aero cars that they run these days no matter what the series is. I do get tired hearing one driver after another who had a bad day blame it on the car as it was an aero issue, or an computer issue, or what not. Racing was just better in the years past when the driver was as important as the car package.

Adrian, that bearing really works out quite well as a the fuel filler. Just might very well be the most expensive one e ever used for a model.

Ahhhh I'm so mad at myself ... went to the bed cursing a blue streak. So the first black coat I put on the body was Mr. color - I was giving it a whirl because I was impressed by one of their other colors I used on a different project. I didn't like it at all - was very faded overall and lacked richness - so I hit it e sat on the X-1 and after a day was still tacky to the touch - oil and water don't mix and for the life of me I don't know how I forgot that one. So I brainstormed and decided stripping the magenta with a damp micro Fibre cloth - it literally rolled off - and I knew I had to now hit it with Tamiya Primer Fine. So like an idiot for some reason I just started to lay on the primer heavy handed as if I was doing an initial coat - instead of just misting it on so there was enough to grab the Acrylic - ARRGH! So now basically the tape lines are barely visible with a fairly heavy primer over top of them - I honestly don't know if there will be any bleed of grey primer on the line when I go to peel the tape after the Magenta coats - but I'm not stripping the 4 hour tape job I did based on a guess - and I can't wet sand because it will break down the tape to much - SOOOO - I am going to do a wait and see and keep my fingers crossed - I mean worst case scenario is if there is any grey visible then I have to hit it with Future then re- tape just under the line and re hit with the X-1 to cover it - but I really hope that's not necessary given the amount of extra work that will be ;( I just get really angry at myself when I make silly mistakes like that when I know better - makes me feel like I really am getting old lol ... Had so much fun making the Exhaust tips - making these is always one of my favorite steps in any model - making them look realistic is so much fun - these are trick to because lacking an engine I had to create an invisible under the chassis mount so that they appear to be coming out from the manifold. I won't know if I have gotten the angle right until I mount them as one of the last steps in final assembly. Tires are also coming along nicely - weathering them to as they appeared after the race - God bless tamiya rubber blk. The centre wheel nut is amde up of a tiny Nut painted flat black with a ball bearing sitting in the hole - still needs painting.

Adrian, The tires came out looking perfect. Same goes for the two exhaust tips. But I'm totally confused about the paint issues. At this point both the Magenta and the Black have been stripped, and then you reprimed with Tamiya Gray primer but the coats were to heavy, so there's a major build up along the edges of the tape. Have you considered sanding with a fine grit but 90 degrees from the body of the tape across the edge? That will prevent the tape from tearing the edge. Just work slowly and very carefully.
