Just a short introduction as to why I asked for this category to be added to the range of subject folders. Looking through the categories initially chosen for the forum, I felt there was not an existing option for touring car racers (unless they were buried in some other folder - and hard to find) which has always been a poor relation in model car kit making. Since this is most certainly not the case with 1/18th scale diecast, I decided there must be some of us about with an interest in this area of building. I would also encourage questions and suggestions about the real thing, and any reference photographs in keeping within the regulations of the group as a whole.

Thank You your input, when I set up this Group it was to fill a void for Model Builders who build Race Cars with fenders, and even more important that it be relatively Free of Rules and Regulations and be for the Modelers themselves. So Please continue to put your ideas or requests out there and enjoy Our Group! Chris

OK, since I initiated this group addition, I should post some finished models. Feel free to ask for specifics on any of the cars. This model was intended to represent the Alfa 75 run by Colin Bond in the 1987 ATCC. It is a modified bBurago metal kit, which is reasonably accurate. There are several problems though - it should have the turbo body kit, and should be right hand drive. It is my intention to eventually scrap this model, and to backdate it to a 1986 75 V6. Another modified bBurago, again a reasonable attempt at the car in 1/24th scale. One or two other diecast manufacturers have released models of the 156 since this version went on sale, but the bBurago is as good an effort despite some shortcomings. This model was modified to represent a Supertouring Alfa 156. It is not intended to be completely accurate about any vehicle or race event in particular. Attachments:

I chose the Tamiya (24113) as the basis for this model, theirs is the most accurate of the kit options on the market. Added some p/e and seat belts, lowered the rear suspension by about 2mm and used replacement decals by MSM of Hong Kong (MSMD097). These are of far superior quality than the originals, and include the Reebok markings not found on any other aftermarket set. Attachments:

Tamiya Ford Sierra RS500 kit with added roll cage pieces, p/e and seat belts, and Shunko decals which although much better quality than the kit originals still struggle against the gloss black paint on the body. Attachments:

A modified version of the Aoshima kit of the race Nissan Skyline DR30. I used wheels and decals from a Fujimi HR31 GTS-R Reebok (kit #62433) to represent the car driven by Masahiro Hasemi at the beginning of the 1988 AJTCC season. Attachments:

An interesting conversion to a DISM (Aoshima) 1/24th scale diecast, adding p/e, seat belts, the correct wheel rim type (Fujimi) with slicks, and some minor corrections to the interior. Also added the correct side exit exhaust pipe. The original model has a proper decal scheme so nothing needed to be added there, and I think the body shape is slightly more accurate than their own injection plastic kit of the iconic AE86 Corolla. Built using the excellent Tamiya group A race version of the BMW 635 kit (#24061). Note that most real 635 racers were the pre April 1986 update to the car, so the waist high 'rubbing strip' should be removed. Less well off teams updated the exhaust system to give more power after this date, but didn't always add this strip to the body side. Pay close attention to this when choosing a subject to represent. Decals are from S27 and are mostly accurate although do not include all of the markings required to represent the Intertec race indicated on the header. An accurate model of the 1985 AJTCC car can be made using the sheet though, which can be seen on youtube footage. Attachments:

Built using the Tamiya kit (#24076) adding those things we usually put on kits these days - p/e, seat belts and roll cage additions where required. Attachments:

Built by using most of the parts from the Tamiya group A race kit (#24076) and adding those pieces from a Fujimi 1989 update version - including the decals. This included the nose which had to be cut from the kit body, and then grafted to the Tamiya original. Some manipulation is required to get a decent looking fit. Most of the rest of what was done was typical for me - p/e and seat belts. I went to this amount of trouble because the Fujimi is not as convincing a replica, and was the usual kit from them at this time - a road car with a set of decals. Even the wheel rims are entirely inaccurate! Attachments:

Another kit using Tamiya kit 24076. This was modified by using the left hand drive dash from the 'road' kit and not fitting the rear wing to represent the non turbo 3.0 litre car. Decals were by Modelers Japan, although I imagine they would be very hard to find these days. The more so since no race team apart from Tom's ever made a success of this car - turbocharged or otherwise. This model is of the cars which were campaigned occasionally during the 1987 WTCC/ETCC, and which usually broke down. Attachments:

That's all for now. I have to make an admission, three are modified 1/24th scale diecasts - it's often the only way to get a particular model in this scale. I would hope not to restrict this thread to any particular scale (although preferably larger than 1/32nd inclusive), or to plastic/resin subjects. Feel free to give a little background information on the model you post - the real thing and any significant modifications made.

I love the 635 BMW. I might do one because of your input. Thanks.
