Haas signs 17-year-old American Santino Ferrucci as development driver
Haas has signed a 17-year-old American, Santino Ferrucci, as its development driver.
Ferrucci will drive in GP3 for DAMS this year, but will also be embedded in the Haas F1 team, attending races, tests and taking part in the team's simulator programme.
He comes to the new role with a solid junior career and, among other accolades, became the youngest race winner in British Formula 3 in 2014. Last year he finished third in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, his first full season competing in an open-wheel championship, along with 25 race appearances in the Formula 3 European Championship, including one podium finish at-Spa Francorchamps.
"In Formula One, developing your personnel is as important as developing your racecar. You can't have one without the other," Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said. "Santino Ferrucci has done a very good job of proving himself in each of the racing series he's competed in, and his maturity outside of the racecar is impressive.
"We see Santino as a young, American driver with a lot of potential. His opportunity with DAMS is an excellent way for him to further his development while positioning Haas F1 Team for future success."
Ferrucci added: "My goal since I first started racing was to become a Formula One driver, and to be an American who is part of an American team is something I take a tremendous amount of pride in.
"There is still a lot of work I need to do, but being paired with Haas F1 Team will allow me to learn more and at a faster rate. It'll allow me to make the most of my GP3 drive with DAMS and, ultimately, prepare me for Formula One."

Despite a series of problems at testing in Barcelona, Haas F-1 says the problems actually increased their knowledge of how the car acts and re-acts. They said the test was a big success and they will be very much ready to be competitive in Australia. That is what testing should be about and I wish them success in the seasons first race. Grosjean also said he learned much about the car, although he did crash twice, he stated that was a learning situation. They are going for POINTS in their first race.. Chris

Haas working on Romain Grosjean-NASCAR plan
Haas is working on a plan which would see Romain Grosjean make a NASCAR appearance, possibly as early as this year.
Since signing for F1's newest team Grosjean has said he would like to make an appearance in the stock car series, with team boss Gene Haas also co-owner of the Stewart-Haas outfit. The F1 team's chief operating officer Joe Custer says a plan is in motion to see if Stewart-Haas can accommodate the Frenchman at some point this season.
"It's definitely on our wish list," Custer told Motorsport.com. "We just have to make it work-- whether it be this year, next year, whenever that is. We're not sure."
"There would be nothing more interesting than a current F1 driver having a good run in a NASCAR race. I thing that would be good for everybody. It would drive more interest."
Custer says the Frenchman would prefer to make his appearance on a road course rather than an oval, given his lack of experience in the latter.
"He's made it clear that he wouldn't want his debut to be on an oval -- where he's never done it before. There's so much going on. We have to figure out the testing opportunities and all the things that would make it a success.
"That would be our first approach -- it is to evaluate what would make this a successful event with sponsors and get everything else aligned right. That takes time."
Despite F1's record 21-race calendar there are opportunities for Grosjean this year. Two of NASCAR's road course races -- Sonoma on June 26 and Watkins Glen on August 7 -- occur on weekends without a grand prix.
While Sonoma comes straight after the Canada/Azerbaijan double header, the Watkins Glen race might be more favourable as it comes in the middle of F1's four-week summer break. Stewart-Haas could be given provision to field a fifth car if Grosjean were to race as a rookie, but any appearance would need to be cleared by NASCAR.
"We would like to have him test. He would be a rookie. I don't think there are any barriers to any of this. We just have to figure it out and get it on the schedule.
"Then, five cars or four cars? Or does he work with another team in the garage. All of that. We have to work out the details and have enough time to make it happen."

Well, if that's what he wants to do and it drives more interest in the sport, more power to him. I just can't fathom the appeal of driving a low tech, heavy, ill handling, and narrow tired spec car after you've raced in F1. Maybe he's looking at a career beyond F1.
