Hi There
In '64 the Chaparrals ran two different style Wheels (The "spoked" wheels didn't show up until '65). One of them was a modified version of the 6 spoke Lotus wheel and that's the one I'm interested in. I've looked through my 4 Chaparral Books and the USRRC Book and viewed more Web Based images than I'll be able to remember- No Joy. So if you can point me in the right direction or post a clear image it'll go a long way in keeping a Crazy man from going Insane!

Hi JC, Yep that's them. In the absence of firm data I plan on spraying the Wheels with something like Blue Angles Blue.

I have a color photo of the Chaparral II at Nassau in '64. The car is at speed so I can't tell the color or even if it is the same wheel but the wheel is very dark. My guess would be black or very dark gray/silver

Thought I replied, but if it shows twice - Oh well. JC Thanks for the input, but By Nassau Chaparral had switched to a Disk type Wheel with 3 steps along the outer area and 4 Ovals placed in the outer area of the inner Disk.

JC on the same Page where you got those is: www.racingsportscars.com/photo/1964/Mosport-1964-06-06-006.jpg The biggest problem with many of the Color Pictures from the Period is color fading and in some cases processing error. The Tub of the 2 was Maroon in color yet period photo run from almost yellow to black and it's in good light. I Do Thank You for taking the time to look and reply. The Wheels I'll be using are inserts for Slot Cars from an outfit named "Concours D'Elegance" item #Con2001. I got them from Professor Motor.

With the dark color of the wheels in the photos, I would guess a dark grey like magnesium or gun metal.

I believe they were brown like the fiberglass chassis(which I at Candlestick Park and it looked brown and not maroon!). Just had to mess with your mind! But, really I think they're brown.

PS-Since your talking about spray painting...what are you building the model from?

Hi Pat
It's an AMT. Going to need to close up a vent and move another along with a couple of other changes to back date it to '64 spec from the '65 configuration of the AMT.

Just to add more uncertainly, I have the Marsh Models 1/43 kit of #367, '64 Laguna Seca race. The instructions call for the wheels to be dark blue metallic. Marsh is usually pretty good with their color references. When I build it thats what I'll go with. If nothing else, they'll look pretty neat in dark blue. Some time ago I saw a color photo in that the wheels looked dark blue. Sorry, I can't remember where the photo was, but the blue wheels stuck in my mind. I also recall several other modeling references over the years that mentioned the wheels as dark blue.
That having been said, I do agree that period photos can, and are often unreliable due to color fade, lighting, etc.
I'm looking forward to your project.

Sandy, Thanks for the additional data point. I tried asking the folks at the Petroleum Museum in Midland Texas (Home of the Chaparral Car Collection) but haven't heard back. Like you I'm headed towards Blue.

True enough Mike, it's in the '65 Configuration. I'm shooting for earlier '64.
