I hear you Richard with regards to restored race cars for historic events. Hard to recognize some of them! I try very hard to find period photos to build them as they actually raced.
I agree that the orange plate is protection for the gas tank, any suggestions about it's shape or how it may be attached?

Might have been a big piece of angle iron? Maybe just flat bar? Probably bolted to the inner rear valance. It's not wide enough to reach the stock bumper mounts, although that's where I would put such a protector.

I know I probably bug some folks when I get on my soap box about Vintage racing. It's a favorite rant of mine. But a lot of what goes on around all sorts of Vintage Racing, from road racing to off-road racing to sprint cars, midgets, Indy and stock cars, is just like taking a woman with gorgeous breasts and putting in massive implants. That oil cooler should be out front of the radiator. Looks good though. The Harrison-Shelby one I have in the garage has the ports at each end, one above the other. The replacement that Fred bought for the Mustang is a new stacked plate type. That dash looks GREAT.

Yea I'm thinking a piece of angle for the tank shield. Here is the photo I based the oil cooler location on.

Yea I'm thinking a piece of angle for the tank shield. Here is the photo I based the oil cooler location on. OK. I see in that restored "GT350" (it has a Mustang grille, not a GT350 grille) they've mounted the oil cooler behind the radiator. Shelby put a large opening in the GT350R fiberglass valance for the oil radiator. On the 67 Trans Am Mustangs, the Shelby crew cut an opening in the stock steel valance where the license plate goes for the oil cooler. In the VAST majority of such cars, whether built by Shelby or Penske or hot rodders, and even the factory engineers at Ford & Chevy mount oil and transmission and power steering coolers in front of the radiator. Same as AC condensors. Apparently in that "GT350", the cooler clears the fan. Maybe they used a short fan spacer for that purpose? It MAY have been mounted there in the Falcon you're replicating. It's hard to tell from the photos I've seen. Here's a couple pics of the Shelby oil cooler I have. I took it down from where it hangs in the roof joists in the garage and took pics of it today to share with you guys what the actual oil coolers look like. The 90° fitting on one end miter cut and welded is attrocious. I would never have done that. But it was done in the 1960s and is still fine. Front view Top view Shelby used these oil coolers in shop built race cars; Cobras, GT350s, Trans Am Mustangs, and Tigers. This one was purchased from Shelby in '68 to add to a car which had not previously had one installed. It later got put on another car that had gotten it's original Shelby installed one damaged in a race. Shelby had a whole catalog of parts for high performance that one could order direct from Shelby in LA or they could order from their local Ford Dealer parts department.

Here is what I have selected as the exterior color: I have painted the interior tub Wimbledon White - at least for now. May paint it body color. I somehow skipped past this post. I wanted to point out that both of my Falcons underneath and inside are painted original body color. The 61 is Algiers Bronze and the 64 is Wimbledon white. Inside the trunk. The dash face. Under the seats. Behind the dash. EVERYWHERE. No paint overspray on the underbelly of the car, it's ALL painted body color. Whether the sheet metal would ever be seen by the owner or not. Even under the black on the core support and in the engine compartment is original body color.

I appreciate Richard you taking the time to post the 1:1 photos as well as all your help and info-thank you! I picked up some Model Masters Champagne Gold Metallic last night which is the color I'll be using. The builder of this Mustang used the same paint.

Thanks Rob. I think the GT350 kit bash worked out well. May want to consider it for your rally version.
