I started putting the decals on the body, because I'm putting off making the seat belts. Not my favorite part of model-building. The Hobby Design decals are excellent. Next I have to add a bunch of lightning bolts all over the car. I'm afraid it's going to make the model look like the paint is cracking, but that's how the real car was marked. The lightning bolts are kind of ironic, because the body had built up a good static charge last week, which made for an interesting science experiment when I went to touch up some of the metallic blue paint where the body meets the top windshield. When the brush got about 1/4" from the body, you could see metal flakes and vapors from the paint jumping from the brush to the black strip on the roof, leaving lots of ~1/4" long lines of metallic particles. Fortunately, they weren't permanently attached. I tried to get some video of it, but couldn't. It looked pretty cool. Also, can I ask for some opinions on how to do the brake lights? The real car has two bars of LEDs on each side, and Fujimi provides these as white decals, instead of clear parts. They look a little overdone on the model, where on the real car, they look like clear, dark bars. Should I keep the decals as-is (right side), leave them off (left side), or maybe coat them with a thinned dark gray or Tamiya Smoke to tone them down? They're a little silvered and not quite straight, but I didn't want to address that until I decide whether or not to keep them. Ben

Ben I looked at all my research pics and the kit decals are pretty accurate, I think the problem you are seeing is due to the black background color.... if you want to tone them down that might help just some clear with a very slight tint of gray?? I would leave them as is though..

Thanks! I think I will keep them. I'll try hitting them with a little bit of a tint with acrylic paint, to see how it looks. If it doesn't work, I'll be able to wipe it off with a little Windex.

Looking really good! Yes, I'd try a tint to see how it looks.
Thanks, Ismael

Ben, You're making great progress for sure. Those Led lights look fine. it's only because you're so focused on them that they seem wrong to you. Give it a little time and you'll like the way that they look a whole lot better. Joel

Finished! Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. I'll post some better ones once my camera battery is charged. It's a great kit; not too hard to build. The only fiddly parts were mounting the body to the chassis and adding the dive planes on the front. The photos don't do the Mazda Aurora Blue touch-up paint justice. It's a deep blue metallic, and a couple of clear coats and some car wax really made it pop. I was too cheap to buy photo etched seat belt hardware, so I made my own from painted medical tape, styrene sheet, and bits of staple, with some leftover logo decals from an Indycals sheet. The cockpit is so dark, you can't see anything in there, anyway. Ben

Ben, You just nailed it. The paint finish is simply outstanding. Can't see a thing in the interior, so your decision sure looks like the correct one. Joel

Thanks, Joel! I'm pretty proud of the paint job. It's tempting to build a street version, just to have another model in that color. I'll try to post some better photos later today. Ben

The finished model is Excellent, this is a project I have been a little intimidated to build, but you know me I got the KA engine set, KA interior/roll cage set and the ST27 photoetch set Oh! and the ST 27 Gulf Livery decals.. The photo is not bad at all, I must confess, I take 99% of my pics with my phone, I do have a Canon EOS Rebel with all the goodies but I find it a pain in the bu** to use so I just use my phone.. Keep on Crankin Out the Great Models!! Chris

Keep on Crankin Out the Great Models!! Chris Chris, This should be one excellent build, and as usual, a lot of eye candy for us to follow and learn from. My other hobby is photography, and I'm a Nikon man. Talk about an expensive hobby, but once you buy the gear, the picture taking is basically free, just as long as you don't keep on changing what you like to photograph. I do love macro work, so I have a Nikkor 105mm Macro lens. But as you said, it's a pain to keep on setting up my gear for a few pictures even using a flash for grab shots. I just never remember to grab my phone when needed during a build session as my mind set has been trained to do the exact opposite. Joel

Thanks, Chris! The basic kit is pretty simple. It will make an impressive model when you add your aftermarket bits to it. Here are some (slightly) better shots of it. The sun finally just came out after 8 straight days of rain, so I guess I'm through modeling for the day. Ben
